Position Overview

Maintains campus lawns by irrigating, mowing, edging, hand trimming, fertilizing, and using weed control methods. Prepares flower beds for growing annuals and bulbs and other areas for seed and sod. Maintains campus trees and shrubs by planting, pruning, watering, spraying, weeding and cleaning shrub plantings. Operates water tanker with pumps, and sprayers as needed. Operates roto tillers, lawn sweepers, sprayers, aerators, and tractors as needed. May assist the Irrigation Technician and waters plant life as needed. Removes snow and ice from stairs, walks and ramps; tractors, and bobcats to remove snow and ice from drives, parking lots and walkways. Removes, sweeps and cleans around trash dumpsters and containers, and collects rubbish left on campus. Provides sign and fence installation. Available to help with or fully abate a facilities emergency. This may necessitate the use of a radio for after hours call backs. Further, a pre arranged shift change may be implemented for predictable emergencies like inclement weather. Performs duties and complies with needs of special events, before, during, and after the special events are completed. Observes, communicates, complies with and enforces Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) provisions; analyzes supplies and materials used in the performance, training and duties of subordinates of the trade. May move furniture/equipment and other inventory for departments on campus. Ability to work shifts other than the traditional Monday-Friday, 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. hours; as well as other shifts and schedules for snow removal and/or other emergencies. Performs other duties as assigned

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls. Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges. Gather and remove litter. Maintain or repair tools, equipment, or structures. Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders. Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other grounds features year round.

Qualifications/Experience Required

Performs administrative or manual tasks. Requires general education or vocational training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Familiarity with the chemicals common to the trade. Previous experience in landscaping maintenance.


Sufficient dexterity and coordination to operate equipment common to the trade, especially trucks and industrial tractors. Reads, understands manuals and instructions printed in English and documents legibly in same. Good oral and written communications are needed to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. Knowledgeable in sound human relations practices in establishing and maintaining effective working relations within the Physical Plant and UCO Community, as well as outside vendors, in order to fulfill the expectations of this job description. Must be able to read and follow blue prints, schematics, drawings, and O & M Manuals common to the trade. Knowledge of use and disposal of chemicals common to the trade in a manner which protects oneself, others in the work area, and the environment. Knowledge of and ability to use different hand tools and equipment commonly used in landscaping maintenance work and material handling equipment. Must know how to apply herbicides, insecticides, dormant oil, fungicides and miticides to control weeds, insects, and disease attacking campus plant life; uses sprayer as needed. Willing to attend seminars, etc. to upgrade skills and/or obtain required training to retain certification relative to trade. Ability to work safely in and around moving mechanical parts of equipment and be protected in areas with fumes or airborne particles and toxic and/or caustic chemicals common to the trade.

Physical Demands

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers. Typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms.

Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.

This position requires a physical. The physical requirements are:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds from floor to waist level.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 200 feet.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry up/down 30 stairs.
  • Ability to walk regularly for long periods of time across the campus.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to use and reach with hands and arms regularly.
  • Ability to climb in high places using a ladder or balance frequently.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend and crawl occasionally.
  • Ability to push or pull dolly loaded with up to 120 pounds for 300 feet occasionally.
  • Must have close, distance, and peripheral vision.
  • Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
