The Department of Pediatrics Section of Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation has an opening for a full-time Instructor - Advanced Practice Provider - Pediatric Palliative Care Program Leader. This position will serve as a Faculty member of the Pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT team located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. You will be based at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) Anschutz site of practice. You will have a 1.0 CFTE clinical effort.
Examples of Work Performed:
This position will be expected to provide coverage for general inpatient and outpatient in the specialty of Pediatric Palliative Care. The position will collaborate with the primary team on the care of patients with a life-limiting or life-threatening diagnosis receiving pediatric palliative care.
Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct comprehensive, focused assessments of children and families with palliative care needs.
- Formulate, implement, monitor, evaluate, and modify palliative care plans and program activities with input from palliative care team and other collaborating care providers.
- Work with patients and families to determine their understanding of their child's condition, proposed treatment plan and treatment options.
- Assist children and families to develop self-care capabilities relative to identified problems.
- Assist in all facets of care coordination for palliative care referrals.
- Engage in quality improvement in patient care services and department functions,
- including evaluating the effectiveness of the health care delivery system in meeting the health care needs of pediatric palliative care patients and families.
- Advocate for improvements in pediatric palliative care through participation in professional, private, and governmental groups.
- Provide clinical expertise and guidance for undergraduate and/or graduate students in the specialty area.
- Act as resource person for clinical information and education as requested by community agencies.
- Assess the environment for potential need for consultation.
- Plan clinical and educational interventions which are consistent with individual/organizational needs and goals, and evaluate change/outcomes.
- Implement patient and family education in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Participate in pediatric palliative care research, including quality and performance improvement initiatives.
- Define goals for professional growth, and participate actively in professional activities and organizations.
- Demonstrate accountability for evaluation of clinical practice, including adherence to organizational, state and national practice standards and codes.
- Engage in active and frequent self-care activities for personal and professional growth and longevity.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring salary for this position is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

- Master's Degree leading to ability to be certified as Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
- The applicant must be licensed to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant in the State of Colorado or have the ability to obtain a license before their start date.
- Minimum of 7+ years of clinical experience, including care of children with complex, chronic and/or life- threatening conditions, and those at end of life;
- Knowledge of medications and prescriptive authority per state law.
Condition of Employment:
- Must successfully pass a drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado
- Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex offender background check
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Clinical nursing care or physician assistant experience in oncology, hospice, children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), or pediatric/neonatal intensive care preferred
- Ability to effectively communicate within a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to communicate with open listening for patients and families.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Strong advocacy skills.
- Knowledge of palliative care concepts including, but not limited to: symptom management, advanced care planning, and psychosocial support.
- Hospice and Palliative Care Certification.
- Received palliative care-specific education or training.
- Program development experience.
