Primary Function of Organization Unit: The NC State College of Veterinary Medicine prepares the next generation of veterinarians and veterinarian scientists, conducts bench and clinical research to solve animal and human health problems, addresses critical ecosystem and public health issues, helps protect the U.S. food supply, and promotes a clearer understanding and appreciation of the ramifications related to the growing human-animal bond that is at the center of these concerns.
Essential Job Duties: Independently design, perform and analyze cellular and molecular biology experiments. Independently design, perform and analyze research on stem cells through the utilization of cell cultures and in vivo models (mainly mice and rat models). Develop research methods and generate research results that will contribute toward publications and presentations. Teach students to advance their understanding of the subject matter and add to/increase current laboratory procedures skills. Train visiting researchers, students, and staff in biosafety and laboratory procedures. Serve as the lab manager to provide laboratory and supervisory support to the PI. Maintain lab safety and animal usage compliance. Assist the PI with grant management and submission. Responsible for creating and overseeing a centralized Laboratory Batch Records System. Review annually the safety plan with the assistance of the EH&S Biosafety Officer. Participate in annual inspection of the facility to satisfy institutional and federal regulations. Ordering supplies and reagents for the lab.
Minimum Education/Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or an undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of experience working in a research environment, or relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Department Required Skills: Basic knowledge of molecular and cell biology. Experience working with rodents and large animal models. Computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Strong written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally.
