About the College/Department

The Poultry Science Department consists of approximately 30 nationally respected faculty in various fields of study. Undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. programs are offered by the Department.

The Poultry Science Department/Center of Excellence for Poultry Science is housed in an 112,000-square-foot office, laboratory and classroom complex located on the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, campus. Additional poultry science facilities are located within close proximity to the campus and include a poultry research farm, a pilot processing plant, a feed mill, a poultry health and isolation unit, and commercial style research farms for broilers and broiler breeders.

Job Type Staff

Summary of Job Duties

Assist researchers and graduate students with experiments and lab tests at the Poultry Farm by taking blood, tissue, and fecal samples, helping with sample collection, bird weighs, record keeping, semen collection, artificial insemination, daily bird care (feeding, water, lights, heat, ventilation, disease monitoring), clean outs, processings, house set-ups, and load-outs. Perform minor maintenance on houses and equipment. Follow established guidelines with regard to animal care, biosecurity, and facility maintenance and housekeeping. Follow IACUC regulations for research projects. Assist with processing and data collection at the Processing Plant. Assist researchers and graduate students with necropsies, taking tissue and blood samples, dissection of carcasses, processing samples, and helping with other lab work. Mow and weed eat around farm. Assist at Vet Research Farm and Feed Mill as necessary.

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of experience in a performing tests in a research laboratory.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of farm equipment operation and maintenance.
Knowledge of poultry house operation and maintenance.
Knowledge of proper care of poultry.
Knowledge of IACUC requirements.
Ability to work as a team player.
Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
Ability to record data using a computer and Microsoft Excel.
