Associate degree (A.S., A.A.) or two year technical certificate in English, Journalism, Marketing, Communication, or Public Relations; and 3 years related experience.
Purpose of Job
The Staff Writer will work with the Office of Land-Grant Communications to develop print deliverables in support of the Research and Extension endeavors of the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. He or she will assist with media initiatives including: press releases, brochures, media advisories, annual reports, research-based and scholarly publications, instructional manuals, as well as feature articles for the School’s magazine and newsletter publications.
Scope of Responsibilities
The Staff Writer is responsible for crafting print communications to inform audiences of the events, successes, activities, research and accomplishments of the Extension and Research components of the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. Communications will encompass news and feature writing, brochures and publications, as well as supporting photography.
•Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Preferred) in Journalism, English, Public Relations, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution of higher learning.
•2 years (at minimum) of experience in a newspaper, academic, magazine or editorial environment
Essential Job Functions
•Collaborates with the Director of Marketing and Communications and other Office of Land-Grant Communications staff to ensure that the Extension and Research components of the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences are given adequate media support through: well written news and feature stories, event promotion, photography, and support for both scholarly and casual publications.
•Interacts with researchers and Extension agents to learn about their work. Facilitate the dissemination of this information via a myriad of appropriate communication strategies.
•Conducts interviews that serve as the basis for news and feature stories
•Inquiries about potential leads for stories and events from within the University’s research and Extension community
•Captures compelling and attractive photos to accompany stories
•Copy-edits research, scholarly and large-scale publications
•Travels to cover off-campus Extension and Research events

•Strong planning and organizational skills, including a keen attention to detail
•The ability to handle multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment
•Superb copyediting, writing and research skills
•The ability to draft and edit text for clarity and creativity on a wide variety of subjects related to the field of agriculture and applied sciences
•Mastery of journalistic norms and skills
•Experience in research-based writing, with the ability to interpret and express complex information into layman’s terms for the average reader
•Familiarity with the Associated Press Stylebook
•Ability to work independently
•Strong journalism/ story-telling background
•Intermediate knowledge of the use of a DSLR Camera
