The Athletics Director is responsible for overseeing the University’s programs for intercollegiate and club sports, as well as athletics facilities. The Director plays a major role in fundraising to support the current and future needs of the Athletics program. Working in collaboration with the Office of University Advancement, the Director is responsible for developing relationships and soliciting gifts from benefactors, as well as for promoting alumni relations among former student-athletes of the University. The Athletics Director is expected to provide leadership that embraces the culture of St. Mary’s as a Catholic and Marianist university and that places its programs – intercollegiate sports and club sports – within the context of the characteristics of Marianist education. The Director is expected to provide the leadership necessary to achieve and maintain a successful athletics program, ensure compliance with all governing authorities, and establish a strong and positive presence at the local, regional and national levels. With six national championships (one academic), St. Mary’s has a rich history of academic excellence and athletic success. Since its founding in 1852, St. Mary’s has built a rich and successful tradition in athletics, having won more than 120 conference championships and advancing to NAIA and NCAA Division II post season play more than 50 times. St. Mary’s is currently a member of the Heartland Conference and NCAA Division II, but is transitioning into the Lone Star Conference beginning, Fall 2019. The University has 11 intercollegiate teams in the following sports: baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis and golf. Its more than 200 student-athletes consistently graduate at a higher rate than the overall student body. The University has some of the best indoor and outdoor facilities in the region for all its intercollegiate sports played on campus. The Athletics Director position is full-time, 12-months a year, reports to the President and is a member of the President’s Leadership Council.
Qualifications: Minimum of five to eight years of relevant administrative/supervisory experience in intercollegiate or professional athletics required and preferably at NCAA Division II or III institutions. Experience at a Catholic or other faith-based university preferred. Demonstrated experience in athletics fundraising; experience in budget oversight and development; knowledge of NCAA compliance regulation; and excellent interpersonal communication skills required. A bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree preferred.
