Job Summary:

The Advisor in Student Services for the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) advises and registers for all master's and postmaster's level education programs for current and interested students. The Academic Advisor will work from our offices at Lamar University advising students on entrance requirements, courses, degree paths, retention issues, graduation and certification requirements and registering students for required coursework. The advisor will generate welcome packets and manage graduation completion in Degree Audit with the assistance of the Director. Al l master's and post-master's education programs in the COEHD are graduate level and are offered fully online.
Communication with interested and participating students is online and by telephone. The Academic Advisor works under the supervision of the Director of Student Services for the COEHD and works closely with other Academic Advisors, Graduate Studies, Graduate Admissions and Records, the Graduate Testing/Certification Office, and Lamar University's technology personnel. The Academic Advisor is responsible for maintaining student records, tracking students' program choices and persistence in the programs, and tracking completion of program requirements.

The candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field with a master’s degree preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

Candidates must have strong technology skills including portal-based, Excel or other spreadsheet, data systems and record-keeping software, Banner, and Degree Audit or similar student information systems. Candidates must have the ability to work independently as well as the ability to collaborate and cooperate as part of a team. A collegial and professional disposition is required. The candidate must have excellent technological and organizational skills, and a willingness to learn and to initiate action when needed.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in educational settings, in advising, and in technology applications for student data management.

Candidates with a master’s degree and knowledge of Degree Audit, Banner systems of student management are preferred.
