Occupational Summary
The cardiothoracic nurse practitioner will provide medical and surgical care for patients requiring cardiothoracic surgery. The cardiothoracic nurse practitioner will perform these services under the direct supervision of the faculty physician(s). The cardiothoracic nurse practitioner will provide perioperative care in various hospital and clinic settings. The cardiothoracic nurse practitioner will be involved with the care of the patient in any role which the supervisory physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, medical center regulations, delineation of privileges, and the training, knowledge, skills and experience of the cardiothoracic nurse practitioner.

Clinical Role:

Qualifications:

Certification as a nurse practitioner and successful licensure in North Carolina is required. Experience in critical care and the management of cardiovascular patients is preferred.

Scope of Practice:

The cardiothoracic nurse practitioner provides care to patients of all

ages (newborn to elderly adult). Below are listed basic functions performed by the cardiothoracic nurse practitioner. This list is not all inclusive. All functions are at the discretion of the supervisory faculty physician.

• History/ physical examinations, and consultations

• Admission and perioperative orders including consultations

• Data acquisition/analysis

• Recording progress, procedure, and brief operative notes

• Coordinates/communicates patient care with nursing staff

• Participates in patient/family education

• Communicates with referring/consulting housestaff and physicians

• Participates in daily patient rounds

• Obtains data for surgical research

• Initiates/participates in resuscitation of patients ( by ACLS standards )

• Dictates discharge summaries/participates in medical chart maintenance

• Participates in follow-up care for discharged patients

• Evaluates pre and postoperative patients in the clinic setting

• Initiates orders for medications/intravenous fluids

Education
