Associate Director for Student Support and Advocacy

The Associate Director will be charged with providing leadership and expertise in the area of interpersonal violence, substance use, prevention education programming. The position will develop and sustain collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in an effort to promote streamlined services and supports for all victims of sexual assault and interpersonal violence as well as students struggling with alcohol, tobacco, and other drug issues. Administrative duties will involve active participation in the coordination of services, providing guidance related to policy development, and initiating and assisting the Director with best practices and campus wide awareness related to interpersonal violence and substance use. Additionally, the Associate Director is part of Student Support team responsible for offering comprehensive services for students in an effort to foster the safety and well-being of the Mason community, and will help triage and conduct intake meetings, as needed related to students in crisis/and or distress. The Associate Director will provide supervision/and leadership to all staff in the absence of the Director and as needed.

  1. Provide Divisional Leadership Related to Title IX and VAWA:Regularly consult with Director on proposed changes in services, policies, and practices due to new legal guidance. Provide subject matter expertise on interpersonal violence and substance use issues.
  2. Oversee and Comply with Grant Funded Awards: Hire staff as needed, monitor outcomes of the grant, complete all mandatory record reviews and reports necessary. This includes the preparation of applications for supplemental funding for specific programs and services and strategies. It may include internal resource allocation as well as external grant funds.
  3. Provide Strategic Plan for Programming and Development: This includes designing and implementing a comprehensive package of co-curricular programs that address substance use and sexual misconduct prevention including primary prevention, bystander intervention, and risk reduction; partnering with diversity-focused campus partners to implement prevention programming that is responsive to diversity; and oversight of workshops, public awareness campaigns, materials development, and technology for a range of audiences (i.e., students, faculty, staff, and community members).
  4. Primary Liaison for Sexual Assault Response Team: Coordinate and meet with all members of SART and provide input in the effort to work together with stakeholder and team members that will formalize guidelines that prioritize victims' needs, and promote public safety.
  5. Supervise Interpersonal Violence Services: Oversee the recruitment of Peer Advocates and monitor the mandated training given to all serving the hotline.
    Oversee, schedule, and monitor the hotline. This includes sharing responsibility for the 24-hour crisis hotline; and helping to provide crisis intervention, ongoing case management, and referral to the campus community. Manage referrals and student issues related to distress/crisis intervention and to implement developmentally appropriate interventions, coordinate resources and services, and monitor follow-up and progress of students of concern cases.
  6. Supervise Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Services: Oversee the administration of the BASICS program, development of the Patriots for Recovery group, and educational outreach to the community as well as the development of trainings on topics of substance use and abuse. Coordinate SSAC's work on ATOD issues with Mason and local stakeholders.
  7. Supervise Programming Coordination: Oversee all programming and marketing efforts for the Center as well as management all social media outreach.
  8. Supervision: This includes supervision of professional staff as assigned, graduate students and student volunteers.
  9. Student Coordination and Leadership: This involves working closely with student leaders and student groups in coordinating programs and partnerships toward shared goals. This includes the recruitment, training and coordination of peer advocates.
  10. Assessment, Counseling and Referral: Individual students may need support or advice regarding issues involving incidents of interpersonal violence. This is designed as an immediate and short-term solution, with longer-term assistance referred to other professionals and agencies as deemed appropriate.
  11. Oversee and Monitor Workshops, Seminars, and Training Sessions: These workshops will be appropriate for a variety of groups including peer leaders, students, staff and faculty.
  12. Public Awareness: This incorporates oversight of campaign materials, from initial conceptual design to final product development, in a range of formats (i.e., brochure, poster, flier, public service announcement, MS PowerPoint, Web site, and social media).
  13. Policy Support and Development: This involves working with campus and community offices and agencies to implement and support current policies and procedures. It also includes identification of ways of further enhancing meaningful and appropriate policies and procedures.
  14. Preparation of Written Reports: This includes internal/external mandated reporting.
  15. Management and Organization: Organizing the overall management of violence prevention education programs and services as well as ATOD prevention and intervention services including the supervision of consultants and student staff. This also includes an overall strategic plan with timelines and milestones and appropriate record keeping.
  16. Coordination with the Campus/Community Coordination Council and Other Related Community Coalitions: Linkages with these campus-based and community committees are essential for further promoting shared responsibilities for violence prevention and intervention. This will be particularly helpful with the strategic planning and resource allocation processes.
  17. Internal Coordination and Cooperation: This involves close work with a range of university offices and personnel—with particular attention to University Life offices, academic departments, faculty, and other staff. Provide support and guidance to offices in matters pertaining to case management; consult with Director and Dean of Students staff when impact of a situation crosses functional boundaries, while maintaining confidential reporting status related to Title IX.
  18. External Collaboration and Assistance: This includes work with community offices and agencies including local groups, state agencies, and federal/national agencies.
  19. Record Keeping: Ensure that students of concern records and interpersonal violence and sexual assault records are maintained in accordance with University policies and applicable laws and are readily available to internal staff.
  20. Assessment: Coordinate SSAC assessment efforts. This includes creation and management of TK20 plans, program and service user satisfaction evaluations, and learning outcome assessments.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree is required; will consider a broad-range of relevant backgrounds such as community health, health promotion, social work, criminal justice, public health, women's studies, community health education, higher education, and/or community organizing; others as appropriate;
  • Professional staff supervision experience;
  • Budgeting experience;
  • Ability to maintain and manage confidential information;
  • A strong attention to detail and accuracy; and
  • Previous experience in violence prevention, substance use and addiction, or community health.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous success in developing grant proposals and receiving grant awards related to violence prevention;
  • Previous experience working with college-aged individuals on substance use and violence prevention;
  • Previous experience developing and delivering education programs and training; and
  • Commitment to a collaborative approach to student wellness including working with committees, coalitions, administration and community agencies.
