Job Description Summary:

The Associate Dean for Professional Development and Career Strategies (Career Center - CC) provides professional career counseling, planning, and advising services to JD and LLM students, and to our alumni population in order to enhance and develop future and present employment opportunities. The Associate Dean of the CC has the responsibility for developing a vision and strategic plan, and for providing leadership and management for the overall administration, organization, and supervision of the office. The Associate Dean of the CDO is a member of the Dean's
management team and represents the law school on University graduate student employment committees and councils. Responsibilities include:
• Represents the Law School to external constituencies including local, regional and national legal communities, potential employers, alumni and the general public in order to develop outreach strategies to enhance employment opportunities for the School's students and alumni.
• Keeps the Dean apprised of the status of his office and the current legal employment picture.
• Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures to meet student career planning and placement needs; monitors and evaluates programmatic effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
• Responsible for the supervision of career development of 17 subordinates including career counselors and administrative staff.
• Manages the delivery of career advising to ensure that students are provided with the tools, resources and guidance necessary to enable them to secure fulfilling legal employment and/or advancing their careers in the legal profession; oversees efforts to support students seeking judicial clerkships.
• Responsible for the design and management of comprehensive recruitment programs and employer and alumni outreach events both on and off the campus; collaborates with the academic administrators and faculty within the School regarding recruitment and outreach programs.
• Oversees the development of promotional marketing/communications materials to ensure messaging is directed to key constituents; and oversees the collection and analysis of reporting data for internal and external audiences.
• Oversees and manages the daily function of the CC including supervising career counselors and administrative support staff. Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the Office's goals and objectives to include overseeing the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of unit staff.
• Responsible for managing, through his office, the compilation and submission of data required for: (1) the annual American Bar Association (ABA) Employment Report; (2) the annual ABA Bar Passage report; (3) both employment and bar passage data for the annual U.S. News Law School Rankings report; and (4) the annual NALP employment report.
• Develops strategies for creating law school funded and non-law school funded fellowships for recent graduates.
• Interfaces with faculty and alumni on a regular basis in working with committees of those groups, which are dedicated to the employment of our graduates.
• Supports GW Law's Inns of Court and Foundations of Practice programs by integrating the CC's counseling approach with the mission and themes of the each program. Serves as an advisor to an Inn and oversees the counselor's involvement in the program.
• Performs other work related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

• JD from an ABA accredited law school or appropriate masters degree
• Strong knowledge of legal career employment opportunities and local, regional and national job markets

• Strong understanding of career development issues affecting law students, lawyers, and the legal profession; ability to develop related programs/materials
• Demonstrated understanding of the ABA's rule for employment data
• Strong interpersonal skills to inspire and work effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty, alumni, staff, and legal employers
• Ability to conceive and execute a strategic vision for the CC
• Ability to develop marketing strategies to enhance employment opportunities
• Significant management and supervisory experience
• Excellent oral and written communication/presentation skills
