Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Vector Borne Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (VBDDL) is a research-based unit providing serologic and molecular testing for vector-borne infectious diseases in companion animals for referring veterinarians. Under the co-directorship of three CVM faculty members, 4 technicians perform routine diagnostic assays on a fee for service basis.
Essential Job Duties: The molecular biology technician processes diagnostic requests for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing for the Vector Borne Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (VBDDL). During testing, this position will help oversees quality control of sample processing, including sample organization, DNA extraction, and PCR testing. This position will have a lead role in organizing results into the main database and will help with molecular testing for various research projects as needed. Furthermore, this position will perform research-based Western blot and IFA sample analysis as needed. This position primarily works independently but will also assist other technicians within the lab as needed. In addition, this position monitors weekly completion of all molecular diagnostic testing and will take initiative to improve and validate new molecular tests as needed.
Department Required Skills: Experience with performing standard molecular techniques.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: 4-year degree highly desirable Skills in DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, plasmid cloning. Experience with sequence analysis preferred. Prior experience or interest in Infectious Diseases highly desirable. Previous experience in a clinical/diagnostic laboratory setting.
