In alignment with the strategic vision of the hospital and department, preferred areas of clinical and research focus include high risk pregnancy, ultrasound skills, maternity care for critically ill, complex and vulnerable patients, and MFM community outreach activities. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2018.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is part of the Inner City Health Program at St. Michael's Hospital and is committed to patient-centered multidisciplinary care, an integrated approach to community health as well as excellence in education and research. St. Michael's commitment to multidisciplinary care for patients with complex and critical illness is demonstrated by its nationally and internationally recognized programs in multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, bleeding disorders, diabetes, HIV, addiction, renal transplant, and intensive care (complex medical and surgical, trauma, neurosurgery, and cardiac and cardiovascular).

St. Michael's hosts an array of research and education centres including the Li Ka Shing Institute for Knowledge Translation, Centre for Urban Health Solutions (CUBHS), Applied Health Research Centre (AHRC), Centre for Research in Inner City Health (CRICH) and Centre for Global Health Research, Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre and Centre for Faculty Development. These resources offer extensive opportunities for collaboration in urban health research, education and knowledge translation.

The St. Michael's Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and provides learning experiences for fellows, obstetrics and gynaecology residents, family practice residents, interns, medical students, and students of nursing and midwifery. The department is proud to maintain robust, award-winning research activities and a strong, multidisciplinary, continuous quality improvement program. St. Michael's was the first teaching hospital to participate in the Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently (MoreOB) pilot project. On a provincial level, we are active participants in the Southern Ontario Obstetrical Network (SOON) and Better Outcomes and Registry Network (BORN) Ontario.

The Department has a total of 17 faculty members: 4 MIGS fellowship-trained and 9 core obstetrician-gyneacologists, 1 urogynaecologist, and three maternal fetal medicine subspecialists. The hospital does approximately 3,000 deliveries per year and the obstetrical activities are fully supported by a level 2C neonatal intensive care unit which will be undergoing a complete renovation and expansion planned to begin in 2019. The Department collaborates with other maternity care disciplines such as Family Medicine and Midwifery, and is committed to interdisciplinary maternity care in partnership with other medical and surgical departments and divisions.

The MFM sub-specialists offer two full-day High Risk Clinics, a morning of Amniocentesis, Prenatal Diagnosis Clinic, Diabetes in Pregnancy Clinic weekly, real-time counseling for anomalous findings on ultrasound, in-patient and outpatient consultations, labour and delivery coverage, and MFM community outreach services. The SMH Ultrasound unit is responsible for obstetric ultrasound training for all U of T Ob/Gyn residents and MFM Fellows. Fetal echocardiography is offered by a Pediatric Cardiologist two mornings weekly and consultative services in the Medical Complications of Pregnancy Clinic by an internist are provided once weekly. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the department's educational responsibilities and clinical and research activities and play an active role in establishing and supporting MFM community outreach programs in our surrounding community hospitals.

In alignment with the hospital's recent corporate merger with St. Joseph's Health Centre and Providence, our department is currently collaborating with St. Joseph's Health Centre on a clinical level to establish our first MFM outreach program by July 1 2018.

Qualified applicants should be licensed or eligible for a license to practice in the province of Ontario with sub-specialist accreditation in Maternal Fetal Medicine through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The University Job Description will be either Clinician Teacher/Educator or Clinician Investigator depending on the candidate's career goals, qualifications and prior accomplishments. Completion of relevant graduate training (MSc) is strongly desired, but not essential. Evidence of academic interest and expertise aligned with the strategic vision of the hospital and department are preferred. The University job descriptions of Clinician Teacher and Clinician Educator are both consistent with having substantial involvement in clinical care with either a strong academic focus on clinical teaching at all levels (Clinician Teacher) or on educational scholarship and leadership (Clinician Educator). The successful applicant will have a full-time hospital appointment, join the department practice plan, and receive alternate funding plan (AFP) support.

In the case of Clinician Investigator, completion of relevant graduate training (MSc or PhD level) is strongly desired, such that the successful candidate demonstrates the ability to develop an independent program of grant-funded research. The University job description of Clinician Investigator is consistent with at least one day/week of protected academic time.
