Assistant Director, Outdoor Pursuits

Summary: The Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits increases the participation and diversification of outdoor recreation programs and participants. Coordinates and administers all aspects of Outdoor Pursuits and advises the Wake Adventure Club. Leads the department’s marketing and promotion efforts. Collaborates with Campus Life partners (i.e. Wellbeing, Student Engagement, Global Programs and Studies, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Office of Sustainability) to promote student engagement and foster physical wellbeing by all members of the campus community.

Essential Functions:

  • Creates and initiates Outdoor Pursuits offerings. Increases and diversifies program offerings and participation through focused programming efforts and partnerships and collaborations with other Campus Life and academic departments.
  • Develops leadership and experiential learning opportunities within Outdoor Pursuits.
  • Teaches and leads climbing, paddling, camping, hiking, skiing, etc. groups throughout the year.
  • Supervises the Coordinator for Outdoor Pursuits. Oversees the student staff for the climbing and bouldering wall, high and low ropes course, and student staff who assist with facility and equipment maintenance and upkeep and on-going inspections.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates student Outdoor Pursuits trip leaders and student staff. Develops and implements comprehensive student development program to foster leadership and transferable life skills.
  • Supervises activity in Outdoor Pursuits; ensures the proper procurement, keeping, maintenance, and systematic rental of outdoor equipment.
  • Advises Wake Adventure Club, Wake Forest University student outdoor recreation club, and, as required, any other student outdoor recreation clubs (e.g., ski and snowboard club).
  • Develops annual goals with appropriate evaluation and assessment metrics to demonstrate progress.
  • Develops and manages the Outdoor Pursuits budget including all revenues and expenditures.
  • Coordinates all aspects of Outdoor Pursuits pre-orientation Wilderness to Wake program.
  • Develops and implements robust marketing of Outdoor Pursuits offerings including (i.e. social media).
  • Oversees Campus Recreation’s risk management policies and procedures; leads staff and colleagues in identifying and addressing areas of risk and exposure; implements best practice; advises the Executive Director on area of concern and recommends policy change.
  • Oversees Campus Recreation’s student marketing team and related departmental marketing efforts across all program areas.
  • Schedules and coordinates usage and maintenance of department motor pool.
  • Fosters an inclusive environment that is welcoming of all members of the campus community especially under-represented populations.
  • Assists with miscellaneous special projects as assigned by the Executive Director of Campus Fitness & Recreation.
  • Assists the Director by performing tasks associated with assigned special projects.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in recreation or related field and at least two years of full-time, professional related experience in supervising outdoor activities and special projects. Or, a bachelor’s degree and significant full-time, professional related experience.
  • Certification as a Wilderness First Responder or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Certification as an Association of Challenge Course Technologies (ACCT) Level II practitioner or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of the University’s automobile insurance policy.
  • Basic understanding and ability to execute Outdoor Pursuits programming on a college campus.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communications skills both verbal and in writing.
  • Knowledge of basic skills, techniques, and certifications involved in programming a variety of outdoor adventure activities.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation, proposal, and monitoring of revenues and expenditures.
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills with various student, faculty, and staff groups on campus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in collegiate and outdoor recreation risk management policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Ability to recruit and retain student personnel and ability to monitor certifications of staff.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications as well as ability to perform web updates along with recruiting participants through various social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with evaluation and assessment including applications, data collection, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment and programs.
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills. Proficiency in computing skills and assessment.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of the University’s automobile insurance policy.
  • Frequent evening and weekend work required as well as occasional overnight trips.
  • Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force regularly. Subject to both inside and outside environmental.
