About the Unit
The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (BMB) studies how biomolecules operate and interact to drive the complex and diverse behaviors of living systems. The questions that we ask are broad and multifaceted, and as a result, our trainees are well equipped for future academic and industrial careers in biochemistry and biophysics. Our research encompasses all areas of modern biochemistry, including structural biology, biophysics, and biomolecular engineering and design. Our Department is distinguished by its intellectual rigor and collaborative style. Interdisciplinary interactions are further facilitated by our presence in the Gordon Center for Integrative Sciences, which brings together a large and diverse group of biological and physical scientists to pursue common research goals.

Job Information

Job Summary:

We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic and responsive researcher to join our experienced team of researchers to investigate the structural basis of cell-culture receptors and other neuronal proteins. The Research Specialist will be expected to manage the day-to-day technical support and development of several research projects.

Responsibilities:

Research (60%)
  • Design, perform, and analyze experiments related to assigned projects involving the following techniques: site-directed mutagenesis, heterologous expression of proteins in E. coli and insect cells, purification of proteins using affinity chromatography, protein crystal trial set-up, tissue culture, and signaling assays


Administrative/Organizational (40%)
  • Supervise the maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Maintain laboratory compliance with biological and chemical safety regulations
  • Supervise the state of some supplies and maintaining inventory
  • Document experiments in Lab Notebook
  • Meet with supervisor regularly to discuss progress and problems in research
  • Aide other members of the lab in maintaining common stock solutions, supplies, chemicals, and media
  • Work with investigators in a cooperative and independent manner
  • Train and supervise students and other coworkers


Competencies:
  • Familiarity with common computer programs (e.g. Microsoft Word and Excel or equivalent) and standard molecular biology and biochemistry laboratory equipment required
  • Ability to learn new concepts and techniques quickly and to work effectively as a team member required
  • Ability to read and keep abreast of technical developments required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required
  • Strong work ethic and organizational skills required
  • Excellent problem-solving skills required
  • Ability to work independently, learn new techniques, and be able to handle multiple tasks required


Additional Requirements

Education, Experience and Certifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry or a related field required


Experience:
  • Experience in performing general molecular biology techniques, general microbiological techniques, restriction analysis, PCR, and site-directed mutagenesis required.
  • Experience in DNA sequencing, DNA and protein electrophoresis, mRNA synthesis and handling, Western blots, affinity, gel filtration and ion exchange chromatography required.
  • Preferred: Experience with protein expression in baculovirus expression system and lig and biding assays
