Staff Assistant – Outreach and Retention Services Specialist

With headquarters in Saratoga Springs, New York, ESC serves mostly working adults pursuing associate, bachelor's and master's degrees online and onsite at 35 locations across the state of New York and abroad.
SUNY Empire State College, Office of the Retention Services, seeks an Outreach and Retention Services Specialist (State title: Staff Assistant) at our Cheektowaga, New York location.
Retention Services is a relatively new office at the college, with a critical function to reach the enrollment goals of the college. The purpose of Retention Services is to provide a supportive pathway for the successful enrollment of accepted students. The Retention Specialist will serve on a team of seven who jointly support this mission.
The Retention Specialist is the primary contact for accepted students. Their purpose is to pave the way for students' orientation enrollment. This effort would include: clear, concise communications to new students upon acceptance; developing new processes for ease of enrollment; utilizing college systems to improve servicing; providing a safety net for accepted students; referring new students to easily access needed assistance; and resolve any barriers to enrollment.
The successful candidate will develop and provide resources to accepted students so that they have access to the necessary information that will help them realize the sometimes life-long goal of starting their degree. This includes the development of a new student web page as well as other ideas developed by the successful candidate.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate an ability to:
- Collaborate with team members to enhance the overall functionality of the team
- Effectively brainstorm for onboarding program development
- Work closely with other constituents, such as Marketing
The successful candidate will be expected to: use college technology applications to support and monitor activities and outcomes; have a comprehensive understanding of technological systems, as well as non-technological systems and how to best use them; to innovate and improve the services provided by the college.
- Bachelors degree
- 1-3 years of experience working in higher education
- Experience working with new students
- Experience as an effective team player
- Masters degree
- 3-5 years of experience working in Higher Education
- Experience with admitted students, helping them enroll
- May involve occasional travel
- VISA sponsorship is not available for this position
- Occasional evening hours may be necessary during peak times
