Experience Requirement: A strong background in medical education is preferred, as is experience in pre-doctoral teaching, well-developed communication skills and knowledge of budgeting, and administration. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and training.

Usual Duties: Serves the Sam Houston State University Proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine, in leadership of the Department of Primary Care. The University is seeking qualified candidates for the full-time position for Chair, Primary Care Medicine. The position reports to the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. The proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine is currently in applicant status and is seeking accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. The university will focus on primary care and other specialties identified as a physician workforce shortage in the State of Texas, and has developed an integrated curriculum merging basic science instruction with clinical learning including an osteopathic emphasis. The first class is expected to begin in 2020. The Chair is responsible for the leadership and oversight of primary care faculty, clinical content for systems courses, fostering scholarship and research in the department, assuring quality patient care and fostering collaboration and interdisciplinary learning. Members of the Department of Primary Care will be expected to participate in teaching in the systems courses, physical exam course, case-based learning sessions, preparation for clerkships, procedural skills training, OSCE's and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Laboratory. The members of the department will also participate in the SHSU practice plan. The individual selected as Chair should be comfortable working in preclinical and clinical education, as well as evaluation of curriculum and students through various learning and assessment methods. The ideal candidate should have strong clinical acumen and skills in osteopathic manipulative medicine.

Degree Requirements: The successful candidate will have a DO degree from an accredited college of osteopathic medicine with residency training leading to board certified in Family Medicine, current AOBFP or ABFM board certification and eligibility for, or a current license to practice in Texas.

Other Requirements for the Position: Ability to communicate and work with faculty, medical students, clerkship coordinators, hospital administrators, physician preceptors and college administration. Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrates personal initiative and abilities to deal with a rapidly changing environment. Familiar with Learning Management Systems and reporting. Other duties as assigned.
