Job Description:

The facilities services department seeks a SUNY Campus Worker for an immediate opening.

SUNY Campus Workers performs a variety of relatively unskilled tasks related to the operation of State University of New York (SUNY) campus facilities including grounds, parking services, and maintenance services.SUNY Campus Worker is a generalist class that performs routine unskilled tasks in various areas that may require light, medium, or heavy physical labor. Duties may also involve public contact, such as collecting parking fees from SUNY patrons and providing information regarding SUNY facilities and their use.


May perform a variety of tasks in support of campus parking programs:
  • Directs patrons to designated parking areas and/or specific parking spots or locations; directs persons or vehicles not authorized to use the parking facilities to alternate locations; inspects vehicles for current and correct parking permits; and assures that cars are parked in the correct area and not in reserved or handicapped spaces.
  • Responds to patron complaints from people denied access by explaining parking requirements and suggesting alternate parking areas.
  • Keeps records of vehicles for which parking privileges have been suspended or revoked and controls access to parking areas accordingly.
  • Inspects assigned area for security and safety of patrons and vehicles, notifying superiors of unsafe conditions or situations.
  • May collect fees and maintain appropriate records; issue parking permits and/or hourly or daily parking passes.
  • May perform parking valet services by issuing to patrons a parking receipt, by moving patron vehicles to authorized parking areas, and by maintaining records and keys for such service per written guidelines.

May assist in the overall cleaning, care, upkeep, and beautification of campus buildings, grounds, structures, and spaces:
  • Picks up and removes hazardous articles which may be on floors, furniture, and equipment and places them in designated receptacles or in appropriate places.
  • Empties trash and other waste containers.
  • May clean building facilities and restrooms and restock supplies as necessary.

May assist in the overall maintenance of facility and campus grounds, including parking areas, sidewalks and walkways, green areas, roads, and other outdoor spaces:
  • Shovels snow, applies salt and other ice melts, and sweeps, rakes, shovels, and/or picks up debris, trash, and other obstructions from these areas.
  • Trims and removes weeds and overgrowth, prunes and trims trees, plants, shrubs, and other greenery.
  • May be required to operate equipment such as snowblowers, snowplows, lawn mowers, gas and electric trimming and cutting equipment, and other such power equipment in the removal of snow and maintenance of green spaces.
  • May mix and apply over-the-counter pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in accordance with Federal and State regulations.

Performs various manual labor tasks in support of campus operations:
  • Sets up equipment for sporting events, conferences, seminars, and special events.
  • Loads and unloads truck deliveries.
  • Picks up and delivers supplies, furniture, packages, and equipment.
  • Moves items to and from storerooms and/or warehouses.

May assist maintenance positions by performing unskilled and routine maintenance and repair activities:
  • Unclogs toilets and sinks, and flushes and repairs gutters and drains.
  • Replaces lightbulbs and tubes, fuses, and faucet washers and gaskets.
  • Carries supplies and equipment, erects ladders and scaffolding, and removes materials from construction or maintenance sites.
  • Prepares and paints various surfaces.
  • Performs routine maintenance tasks on windows such as replacing broken panes, adjusting slipped panes, glazing and painting sashes, and oiling mechanisms.
  • Assembles modular furniture based on written instructions or schematics.
  • Mixes mortar, plaster, and other building and construction materials.
  • Hangs pictures and other dcor, installs blinds and other window treatments.
  • Repairs or replaces shelves, locks, sash cords, screens, and other simple equipment.
  • May operate basic hand and power tools in the performance of unskilled and routine trades tasks.
  • Provides patrons, visitors, students, and faculty with general and routine information such as: directions to campus buildings, areas, and events; campus policies regarding such areas as parking, grounds, and facility use; and fee information for parking and campus events.
  • May be required to collect monies from campus vending machines, parking meters, and other campus-owned fee collecting equipment, and may be required to collect fees for campus events or parking.



There are no education or experience requirements. Applicants must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor. Candidates must possess a valid driver's license. Applicants must also be able to speak, read, and understand English.
