Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
This position is to repair, maintain and service heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation and building control systems. It also conceives, designs, and implements minor systems modifications, and requires occasional installation of new systems. This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow, ice and/or debris removal under the direction of a supervisor.
N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Knowledge of operation and maintenance of building hot water & chilled water systems and related equipment in an industrial setting
In-depth knowledge of basic refrigeration circuit operation with strong diagnostic and repair abilities on heat pumps
Efficient use of HVAC hand tools and diagnostic equipment including but not limited to; Torches, electrical meter, leak detection equipment and vacuum pumps
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 50+ pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations
The ability to perform tasks associated with the HVAC trade on a lead technician level including service, installation and mentoring mechanic level positions
Ability to perform HVAC work as required for emergency call back, weekend work and rotational on-call
Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
Must be able to learn and utilize computer based systems to acknowledge and complete work orders
Preferred education, professional skills and experience:
Employee must have a working knowledge of refrigeration, heating, air conditioning ventilation, pneumatic and electric controls; familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), particularly in Direct Digital Control (DDC); and ability to operate personal computer based software to check building and equipment functions, identify trends, and generate user programs to accomplish specific requirements
Certifications or licensure required to perform the essential functions of the position:
NC Driver’s License
CFC Universal Certificate, types 1, 2 & 3 certificate for refrigerant and recovery systems
Recruitment Range: $45,306 - $46,887
NC Salary Grade Equivalency: 67
Hours Per Week: 1.0 (40 hours per week)
Months Per Year: 12 Months
Work Days: Monday - Friday
Work Hours: 7:00AM - 4:00PM - on call 24 hours per day, 1 week at a time on a rotating schedule and subject to overtime
