Job Summary

The Dean of Faculty and Student Services serves as the Chief Academic Officer and Chief of Student Services on a campus with responsibility for directing academic programs and student related activities. The position collaborates with other Deans and administrators with the goal to advance the discipline and develop innovative, quality academic programs and effective student success initiatives. The Dean of Faculty and Student Services serves as a key advocate for effective teaching and learning, collaborative and innovative strategic enrollment management and maintains a focus on learning outcomes assessments. This is a Professional Exempt Contractual (PEC) position for which an annual contract reflecting the base salary within the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) will be issued after ratification by Miami Dade College's District Board of Trustees.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Directs and leads the activities and programs of student services, including but not limited to: enrollment management, orientation, registration, testing, academic advisement, scholarships, job placement, career and transfer, international students services, financial aid and admissions, disabled student services, veteran's affairs, student life and student related activities
  • Oversees strategic planning for academic affairs on the campus and in assigned college-wide disciplines; establishes key performance indicators for enrollment and student success; meets or exceeds targets and ensures alignment with college-wide priorities
  • Leads the development of strategic course scheduling, innovation in program and course development and the faculty assignment process; ensures that course schedules meet student needs and productivity expectations
  • Develops, maintains and monitors fiscal resources and secures external funding to support educational initiatives; participates in budget development and implementation with responsibility for monitoring assigned budgets
  • Participates in the development and implementation of the College policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Leads the continuous development, review and revision of academic curricula and close out as appropriate; promotes and models use of assessment results to assure quality and relevancy
  • Promotes partnerships with constituents in the external educational, professional and business communities
  • Articulates with other educational institutions and the local community; ensures active advisory committees to meet workforce development needs
  • Oversees faculty advancement and in collaboration with the Deans for the Professional Communities, ensures professional development for full-time and adjunct faculty and instructional support personnel to continuously increase teaching and learning success
  • Coordinates assigned college-wide disciplines including annual effectiveness reports, discipline action plans, accreditation reports, grant reports and strategic enrollment management plans, in consultation with the members of the College's executive leadership team to facilitate alignment with college-wide priorities
  • Monitors ongoing compliance with state, regional and specialized accreditation standards
  • Oversees recruitment, selection, hiring, performance reviews and supervises department chairs, directors, and other assigned personnel; provides leadership, direction and supervision to students, faculty and staff
  • Promotes an environment supportive of the College mission and vision, student centered services and teaching excellence
  • Oversees mediation and/or resolution of faculty and student issues, grievances, and appeals,
  • Manages and provides guidance in the collective bargaining process; maintains ongoing effective communication with faculty representatives and ensures adherence to relevant areas of any collective bargaining agreement
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctorate in Education or related discipline and six (6) years of senior level experience in higher education; or Doctorate in Education or related discipline and equivalent managerial skills and demonstrated leadership and creative accomplishments in an administrative role at an institution of higher learning
  • Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of college educational philosophy and top management administrative practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of college curricula and instructional programs
  • Knowledge of academic trends in pedagogy and faculty development
  • Knowledge of regional accreditation requirements, processes and criteria
  • Knowledge of the goals, objectives, structure and operations of major college institutions
  • Knowledge and skill in effective communication utilizing public relations principles and practices
  • Knowledge of technological systems as they apply to instructional, administrative, and workplace needs
  • Strategic planning skills to effect change in a multi-cultural environment
  • Skill in employee development and performance management
  • Strong leadership skills that promote dedication, creativity, innovation and growth
  • Ability to develop and interpret financial data/plans and manage resources
  • Ability to think, reason, and make sound judgments on how responsibilities are completed in compliance with college standards and guidelines
  • Ability to speak effectively to employees, faculty, staff and community groups
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-ethnic/multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff

Essential Position

  • This function/position has been designated as essential. This means that when the College is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at the College.
