This position is responsible for the set-up and preparation of the laboratory curriculum for the department’s Introductory Biology laboratories and teaching a number of introductory lab sections as specified each semester.  Responsibilities also include updating laboratory curricula to match best practices in biology education.  This position may teach other biology courses on an as needed basis.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting to the Dean of Science, this position performs or works independently/collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

Preparation of lab sections of Biology 43L/44L (Introductory Biology) including:  ordering  organizing and maintaining reagent/supply stocks and equipment used in Introductory Biology labs, inspection and maintenance of lab equipment; preparation of lab manuals; preparation of pre-labs and report guidelines; posting of lab support material in Sakai site.

Hire, train, coordinate and supervise undergraduate Teaching Assistants (TA’s). 

Teach the required number of sections specified each semester;

Oversee grading of pre-labs, recording of grades from all lab instructors and distribution of lab grades to lecture instructors;

Be available to meet with students; oversee end of semester evaluations of instructors and TA’s.

Keep abreast of developments in biology pedagogy, including attending education conferences.  Work with biology faculty to design and implement new curricula that align with best practices in biology education.

Performs other essential duties and tasks specific to the position.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION:  A Ph.D. in Biology, Biological Education or related interdisciplinary field is required.

EXPERIENCE:  Prior experience teaching and/or designing inquiry-based labs in the biological sciences is preferred.

LICENSES:  A valid C Class driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Moderate (20-50 lbs.)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: 

The successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to supervise and organize teams. 

The candidate’s training and experience should display breadth across the broad field of Biology. 

Experience and proficiency with computers and software such as Word and Excel is required.

Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and coordinate undergraduate Teaching Assistants. 

OTHER:

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Monday – Friday.  Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required.  Travel may be required.  Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
