The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Drama seeks an individual with a strong professional background in Devised Theater to create and implement a new curriculum in ensemble performance generation for both performers and directors. The school envisions a full year devising curriculum that will be the focus on the third year of the school's nationally ranked BFA program. In the tradition of companies like The Open Theatre, The Living Theatre, The Wooster Group, Complicte, and the Saratoga International Theatre Institute, as well as newer companies such as The TEAM, Elevator Repair Service, and punchdrunk. The school hopes to imbue its students with the skills and the agency to make their own work, as well as to be equipped to join ensembles or work with directors focused on the newest approaches to creation of the theatrical event. The ideal candidate will have a clearly established track record of having directed multiple devised pieces, either as part of a company or in multiple venues. A resume that includes both immersive and environmental work is especially desirable, and knowledge and integration of non-Western theater practices into their methodology will also make the candidate highly competitive. This is an opportunity for an artist with a strong track record to have a profound impact on the next stage of growth for this already strong and well established training program. Having recently installed a new dean, the UNCSA School of Drama is in an exciting period of examination and growth as it looks to build on its well documented history of offering outstanding training as demonstrated by the success of its alumni. Expansion of curricular offerings in cultural entrepreneurship and devised theater are just two of many ways the school hopes to evolve as part of its commitment to addressing the needs of a rapidly changing industry, and the school looks forward to finding a candidate excited to contribute to this evolution.
