Position Overview

Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls. Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges. Gather and remove litter. Maintain or repair tools, equipment, or structures. Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders. Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other grounds features year round.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Take care of athletic fields. Assist leads in building new flower beds around campus. Mow, edge and weed eat turf (string line trimmer) on campus on a weekly basis. Maintains campus lawns by irrigating, mowing, edging, hand trimming, fertilizing, and using weed control methods. Provides guidance and helps in training employees on equipment, routine daily task and events. Prepares flower beds for growing annuals and bulbs and other areas for seed and sod. Assists the Irrigation Technician and waters plant life as directed. Must have a valid driver's license to drive and operate water tanker with pumps, and sprayers as needed. Moves equipment and other inventory for departments on campus. Operates equipment common to the trade which make include riding mowers, rototillers, lawn sweepers, sprayers, aerators, and tractors as needed. Removes snow and ice from stairs, walks and ramps and driving surfaces. Removes, sweeps, and cleans around trash dumpsters and containers, and collects rubbish left on campus. Observes, communicates, and complies with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) provisions; analyzes supplies and materials used in the performance, training and duties of subordinates of the trade. Assists with minor sidewalk and parking lot repairs using hot and cold patches. Provides sign and fence installation. Available to help with a facilities emergency. This may necessitate the use of a radio for after hours call backs. Further, a prearranged shift change may be implemented for predictable emergencies like inclement weather. Performs duties and complies with needs of special events, before, during, and after the special events are completed. Responsible for obtaining and maintaining all licenses required for code compliance and special tools operations ex. "Licensed Service Technician (Pesticides)." Mow, edge, weed eat all turf. Blow sidewalks clean on University property. Performs other related duties as necessary to support the UCO mission.

Qualifications/Experience Required

Performs manual tasks. Requires general education or vocational training and 3+ years relevant experience in chosen field or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Knowledge of and ability to use different hand tools and equipment commonly used in landscaping maintenance work and material handling equipment. Willing to attend seminars, etc. to upgrade skills and/or obtain required training to retain certification relative to trade. Ability to work safely in and around moving mechanical parts of equipment and be protected in areas with fumes of airborne particles and toxic and/or caustic chemicals common to the trade. Ability to analyze problems and develop practical solutions, to work in and around moving mechanical parts and equipment common to the trade. Good oral and written communications are needed to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. Knowledge in sound human relations practices in establishing and maintaining effective working relations within the Physical Plant and UCO Community as well as outside vendors, in order to fulfill the expectations of this job description. Ability to walk for long periods carrying a string line trimmer or stick edger or walk with a backpack blower. Ability to operate a zero turn mower for long periods of time. Ability to operate mowing equipment in a safe manner, keeping safety the main priority at all times.

Physical Demands

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers. Typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms.

Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist level.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry 200 feet.

  • Ability to walk regularly for long periods of time across the campus.

  • Ability to use and reach with hands and arms regularly.
  • Ability to climb in high places using a ladder or balance frequently.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend and crawl occasionally.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull 40 pounds to waist frequently.
  • Ability to push or pull dolly loaded with up to 120 pounds for 300 feet occasionally.
  • Must have close, distance, and peripheral vision.
  • Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
