The George Washington University Libraries & Academic Innovation (GWLAI) seeks nominations and applications for an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented University Archivist. The University Archives serves as the official "institutional memory" of George Washington University, providing long term stewardship and central access to the collections that document GW's history and the people who have been a part of that history. The University Archives is part of GWLAI's Special Collections and Archives Department that is also distinguished by strong collections in labor history, 20th century Washington DC history, Judaica, rare books, and more.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate identifies historical administrative and academic content to augment the collections of the University Archives. S/he takes a strategic and creative approach to collecting contemporary content, building on a strong foundation that includes records reflecting diverse perspectives of campus communities and individuals. The Archivist has responsibility for prioritizing and managing the processing and description of University collections and resources in all formats, and employs tools and techniques, such as oral history interviews and web archiving, to fill gaps in the official institutional record.

The Archivist fosters curiosity about GW's history through the development of digital resources and social media and introduces new audiences, including students, faculty, alumni, and members of the DC community, to the University Archives through targeted presentations and outreach. The Archivist participates in the public services functions of Special Collections Department, leading initiatives to interpret the institution's history through reference, research, and instruction. The Archivist provides timely and useful information in response to administrative requests and enhances access to administrative and research information assets through GW's digital repository.

The Archivist is a strong collaborator across the university and within the GWLAI organization. As a member of the Special Collections & Archives department, the Archivist serves as a member of that unit's management team, and works closely with colleagues to set goals and establish priorities that support GWLAI and the overall GW institutional mission. The Archivist will contribute to GWLAI's award-winning instruction program; expand digital services, tools, and programs; and participate in programs that help cultivate an institutional culture that values support for new forms of scholarly communications and open access. The Archivist participates in multiple cross-GWLAI initiatives and works closely with GW staff responsible for development, alumni and external relations. The Archivist participates in local, regional, and national professional organizations.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited MLIS in library and information science or other advanced degree with relevant experience
  • Minimum of two years experience working as an archivist
  • Experience with basic archival functions of appraisal, description, processing, reference and outreach
  • Experience with archival materials in digital formats
  • Demonstrated familiarity with principles and practices of records management
  • Experience with archival collections management platforms such as ArchivesSpace
  • Experience with archival description standards such as EAD and DACS
  • Experience managing projects, including planning, communication, and assessment
  • Experience digitizing archival materials
  • Growing record of engagement in professional service or scholarship
