CASSAVA FACE EXPERIMENT MANAGER

Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology

Description: Implement and manage the Cassava (Manihot esculenta) FACE experiment to be conducted at the University of Illinois SoyFACE Global Change Research Facility during 2017 and 2018.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Design and implementation of field trials employing environmental treatments:

1.1. Design and lead field trials on 8 genotypes of cassava. The trial design must be based on expert-accepted concepts of replication, control of variation among plots and randomization, estimation of error variance and unbiased estimates of means and variance requiring advanced training in field research and advanced knowledge of statistics and analysis of variance.

1.2. Determine the level of APHIS permission and certification needed, obtain these permissions and certifications, and establish the required containment to ensure compliance with Cassava import, propagation, planting and movement regulations.

1.3. Apply restricted-used pesticides and herbicides critically needed to control weeks and pests

2. Field environmental monitoring:

2.1. Design a robust system for environmental monitoring and data collection at multiple locations within the field FACE testing plots, using modern sensor technology and data logger programming.

2.2 Monitor the elevated [CO2], ensuring it is within established limits of the target concentration troubling shooting and correcting problems as they arise.

3. Supervision:

3.1. Supervise undergraduates conducting research and farm duties.

3.2. Select the best qualified candidate, provide orientation and training as required, determine the duties to be performed by the undergraduates, assign duties, and evaluate performance.

3.3. Approve time records and leave request.

Education:

Required: B.S. in Plant Science or related field. Alternate degree fields will be accepted/considered based upon the depth and nature of the experience as it relates to this position.

Experience:

Required: Strong statistical background. Demonstrated experience with field research design and data analysis.

Preferred: Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience in conducting field experiments. Candidates with engineering aptitude including experience with electrical circuitry will be given preference.

Training, Licenses or Certifications:

Required: Obtaining Restricted-Use Pesticide training and certification is required.

Knowledge Requirements:

Required: Advanced knowledge of relevant APHIS procedures, including inspection and reporting. Advanced understanding of the mode of action of applicable chemical agents. Effective communication, personal relations, organizational, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively under minimal supervision with a professional demeanor in a fast-paced work environment with multiple and changing priorities. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position is a 12-month, 100% time academic professional appointment with regular University benefits. The proposed starting date is negotiable after the close date.
