Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor's degree in in journalism, communication, marketing or related field, or humanities/science.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least one year of professional experience in communications, marketing or journalism is required. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience as a writer, reporter and/or editor in producing content for print publications and/or electronic communications.
--Excellent writing skills, especially related to marketing communications with the ability to function well under deadline pressure.
--Excellent interpersonal skills with groups and individuals in diverse settings and using a range of techniques including face to face, telephone, email and other written correspondence, and public speaking.
--Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to work toward goals within deadlines and manage complex projects.
--Proficiency with web technology and writing for the web.
-- Experience using Web content management systems such as Drupal or WordPress.
-- Experience with CRM (customer relationship management) systems, or the willingness to learn.
-- Proven ability to identify compelling story leads, or work with others to identify newsworthy topics, and translate complex topics for a general audience.
-- Experience building relationships with the media, fielding media requests for information and pitching stories is helpful.
-- Proficiency with email marketing tools like Constant Contact or MailChimp, etc., or the willingness to learn.
-- Familiarity with development/fundraising practices and alumni engagement.
-- Experience in higher education or nonprofit settings is a plus, but not required.
License or certificate:
The Communications Coordinator works closely with key department staff as well as the University of Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association, the College of Letters and Sciences Office of Advancement, and campus communication resources. This position is responsible for developing and implementing an effective multi-media contact strategy for a variety of audiences, including alumni and donors. A primary focus will be to develop engaging, relevant stories that feature cutting edge research, innovation, outreach and gift impact. The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for creating the "voice" of the Computer Sciences Department through social media, newsletters and other publications.
