Position Summary: The UNC-CH Department of Pharmacology is seeking a Research Assistant Professor to serve as the Director of the Macromolecular X-Ray Diffraction Core as well as the complementary Protein Expression and Purification Core. The two cores work in tandem to provide recombinant proteins and state-of-the-crystallographic services to external and UNC research groups on a fee-for-service basis. UNC-CH is a member of the Southeast Regional Collaborative Access Team at the Advance Photon Source and the successful candidate will also manage our use of the associated synchrotron resources. Consequently, we seek a facilities director with extensive experience in macromolecular x-ray crystallography. The principal functions of the director will be to oversee the daily operations of all offered services and equipment, coordinate the activities of staff personnel, train new users, manage databases and billing operations, and participate in grant writing and preparation of reports. In addition, the director will be responsible for consulting with individual principal investigators to assist in the design and implementation of experimental strategies to produce proteins and solve crystallographic problems. Lastly, the director will be responsible for select data analyses dependent on user needs, oversight of proper preparation of samples by core and user personnel, and the effective communication of results to customers of the facility.

Application Deadline:

Education Requirements: The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacology or another life sciences discipline.

Qualification and Experience: Extensive experience in macromolecular x-ray crystallography is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required for collaborative interactions with other members of the research team and for writing scientific papers, research grants, and presentations. Additional experience in the production of recombinant proteins using eukaryotic expression systems is strongly preferred. Experience with training and mentoring personnel is a plus.
