The George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-accruing, visiting faculty position to serve as the Director of the Institute for African Studies (IAfS). This appointment will begin as early as July 2018 for an initial term of one year with the possibility of renewal for one additional year. Successful candidates may be eligible to apply in an open search for a subsequent contract position. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

As the Director of the Institute for African Studies, he or she will be responsible for advancing and enhancing the educational, research and policy engagement of the Elliott School and the IAfS on matters relating to Africa. He or she will develop objectives and plans for the IAfS; organize research and conferencing activities; develop and lead academic programs on Africa; and fundraise to support the Institute and its program activities. The director will also be expected to teach Africa-related courses, and conduct research and publish in scholarly or policy-related venues on Africa and international affairs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a doctorate in a relevant field at time of application. This could be a doctorate in one of the social sciences, public policy, or another relevant discipline or interdisciplinary field.
