Job Description Summary:

The Department of Surgery has a long tradition, dating back to Doctor Brian Blades, of training excellent clinical surgeons who have benefited their communities. In recent years, we have increased emphasis on augmenting the department’s research profile and elevating its prominence through enhanced quality and impact of research. Working with other departments of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Medical Faculty Associates, we focus on advancing translation of research and increasing interdisciplinary collaboration in key areas of strength.

Dr. Bao Nguyen’s lab studies ischemic/diabetic wound healing with a focus on enhanced angiogenesis. The Research Assistant’s role involves performing basic bench assays such as ELISA, Western blot, qPCR, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, endothelial and hematopoietic stem cell culture, cellular genetic manipulation and angiogenesis assays. The position will also assist with animal care and mouse surgery.

Responsibilities Include:
-Performing experiments with limited supervision and troubleshooting the experiments after seeking appropriate consultation
-Using data analysis software, collecting, analyzing, and reporting data for use in scientific papers and grant proposals
-Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or master’s Degree with experience in basic bench assays such as ELISA, Western blot, qPCR, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and cell culture. Experience with animal work is highly desired but is not required because this skill can be acquired on the job.
