General Summary: The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Dean of Libraries - Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Library Science Tenure Track. This position oversees all university collections, personnel, programs, and services at all four libraries and the Blue Ridge instructional site, and is responsible for leadership in delivering library support and technology to support students, faculty, staff, and the academic program at all locations in accordance with the mission of the university. The position reports to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Job Duties & Responsibilities: The Dean of Libraries - Associate Professor of Library Science will:
  • Write and administer the policies of the university libraries through collaboration with faculty, students, staff, Vice Presidents, Deans, Chief Information Officer, Directors, and other administrators. Engages in strategic planning and assessment consistent with the university mission and strategic plans. Develops, coordinates, and evaluates the goals and objectives of the libraries in relation to the university's mission. Represents the programmatic and personnel needs of the libraries to the university administration. Leads the data collection and reporting for the libraries for approval and accreditation efforts (BOR; SACS; departmental accreditations).
  • Provide effective and responsible management of the budget for all of the university libraries.
  • Oversee the instructional faculty, program, and services for the university libraries. In collaboration with Facilities and IT, advise on and advocate for infrastructure upgrades and changes to all libraries, including existing spaces and proposed new buildings.
  • Research, maintain and improve library services and collections in support of the curricular need of students and the instructional and research requirements of the faculty and staff. Expand networking, interlibrary cooperation, and shared information resources on local, state and national levels; serve on university, regional and state committees. Foster, through the cooperative efforts of the library and unit faculties, the development of library skills among students and faculty. Oversee new course and program proposal process for the Provost's Council relative to the libraries, and manage attendant collection development.
  • Recruit high-quality faculty and staff members. Oversee thorough staff evaluations, appropriate merit recommendations, and support of staff development. Promote and support the professional activities and research of the library faculty. Ensure consistent application of faculty promotion, tenure, and merit standards and oversee an annual process of peer review and evaluation of all libraries faculty. Directly supervise the four members of the Library Leadership Team, and the Special Collections and Digital Initiatives Librarian.
  • Strengthen external relations with the community. Develop a program of effective fund raising on behalf of the library and university. Lead and promote the Digital Commons and special collections for the UNG Libraries, including the targeted growth of digital collections in support of UNG student and faculty research. Work with the other deans and the CRO coordinating library faculty efforts on grants where information on library resources as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of library technology and pedagogy including instructional delivery systems.
  • Knowledge of application software (Microsoft Office suite), research strategies.
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, including ability to build relationships external to the libraries.
  • Initiative, creativity, and flexibility in leadership, initiative, planning.
  • Knowledge of higher education accreditation practices.


Certifications/Licenses & Minimum Requirements:
  • Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited program and Ph.D. required.
  • Five years of administrative experience in progressively more responsible areas.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, lift up to 25 pounds, and push and pull book carts up to a maximum of 100lbs.
  • Experience developing and leading library services and instructional faculty.
  • Experience with personnel processes for hiring, training and staff development for excellent customer services.
  • Financial planning, accounting and budgeting.
  • Grants writing and administration experience.
