Position Summary: The School of Medicine of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a dynamic leader to fill the position of NC AHEC Program Director and Associate Dean. NC AHEC's mission is to meet the state's health and health workforce needs. It is a statewide network leading in workforce development, health systems strengthening, community engagement and integration of primary care, mental health and prevention with a focus on health equity and inclusion in partnership with others to improve the health of the people of North Carolina. The AHEC network serves with the mission of improving the health of the public of North Carolina. Founded in 1972 to serve all 100 North Carolina counties, the AHEC network is housed in the UNC School of Medicine. AHEC's programs improve the supply, distribution, quality, diversity and retention of the state's health workforce, with a focus on addressing the needs of underserved populations, promoting primary care and prevention and improving the quality of health care. NC AHEC is comprised of a broad array of entities involved in implementing its educational programs, information services, consultation services, and other initiatives. Critically important are the nine AHEC Centers, each of which is governed by an independent board or are part of a larger health system. Other important AHEC partners include: the health affairs schools on the UNC Chapel Hill campus; the five other academic health centers in the state, other campuses of the UNC system, and community colleges with health sciences programs; numerous state agencies; and other professional associations, non-profit organizations and other entities who share a mission of enhancing the health of the people of the state. The primary responsibilities of the Program Director include: providing overall statewide direction to the work of NC AHEC, including strategic planning, new program development, institutional relationships, and program evaluation; overseeing the budget for AHEC; overseeing health workforce planning and workforce development initiatives across a broad range of health professions, including fostering collaboration among academic programs to address priority workforce needs; representing the AHEC Program with state constituencies, including serving on various boards and task forces; representing NC AHEC at national levels; leading NC AHEC's response to state and national health priorities such as health disparities, workforce diversity, and shortages, mental health, health systems change and other issues; serving as a member of the senior leadership group within the UNC School of Medicine, assuring effective collaborative relationships with the departments and centers in the school, and with schools and other entities on the UNC campus, and overseeing the TEACCH Autism Program at UNC School of Medicine.
Education Requirements: The position of AHEC Program Director and Associate Dean requires a doctoral degree in a health field.
Qualification and Experience: Must have a record of significant progressive leadership experience. The person must have the credentials to qualify for appointment on the faculty of one of the health affairs schools of the University of North Carolina. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in leadership roles in complex, multi-dimensional and multi-institutional programs required in the current health care environment of increased consolidation and competition. The candidate must possess: vision, superb communication skills; the ability to create and manage collaborative relationships; experience in developing and maintaining high quality community-based health professions education programs; understanding and application of quality improvement models in health care settings; a commitment to addressing the health care needs of vulnerable communities and populations; high level financial management skills to assure the most effective use of public and private funds, and an ability to effectively educate others about and advocate for the NC AHEC Program.
