Director, Program Architecture (Academic Programs)

Position Summary

The director of program architecture will establish, lead, and develop a curriculum mapping team within WGU’s Academic Programs Department. The director innovatively establishes and implements the WGU approach to curriculum mapping. With a team of curriculum mapping specialists, the director will explore areas such as personalized pathways, career planning, industry and accreditation alignment, and prior learning assessment. The director will also explore alternative credentialing and pathways, open loop learning, curriculum development efficiency, and student success opportunities and interventions. This individual will collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure program architectures integrate and support efforts to improve student engagement and performance metrics across the university.

The director will effectively influence change in a highly matrixed organization while working with leadership and functional managers. This individual is accountable for ensuring relevant business strategy is implemented and curriculum-mapping projects are delivered on time and within budget. The director will also share knowledge of the art and science of curriculum mapping at WGU and across the field of higher education.

Job Responsibilities

  • Partners with stakeholders to plan, implement, and support an effective and appropriate curriculum mapping structure that aligns with WGU strategic initiatives
  • Leads the creation or acquisition of tools to scaffold, create, organize, tag, visualize, and store curriculum maps as well as automate these processes across the Academic Programs Department
  • Manages the discovery, mapping, and design of curricula, frameworks, pathways, sequences, and assessment trajectories for online learning environments and competency-based education
  • Directs the creation, maintenance, and utilization of ontologies, taxonomies, vocabularies, and tagging codes, clusters, classes, and hierarchies to mark, organize, and maximize the usefulness of relevant relationships between domains, competencies, outcomes, content, levels, assessments, skills, occupations, etc.
  • Collaborates with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to decide on innovations and improvements to the existing student experience and processes, based on data analysis, current practice, and emerging trends
  • Collaborates with interdepartmental teams to understand individual and overall project needs, creating a cohesive course/program pathway and enhancing the seamless student experience
  • Educates about and advocates for the role curriculum mapping can play in improving outcomes for students and other university stakeholders
  • Produces timely, consistent, and accurate reports for stakeholders and executives
  • Holds direct reports accountable for assigned programs, providing measurable feedback and suggestions for improved performance
  • Coaches, mentors, and assists in the professional development of team members
  • Determines strategic initiatives that support projected Academic Programs’ growth and directs the implementation of new products, technologies, and systems that support effective and innovative practices
  • Synthesizes pertinent information and identifies implications for long-term planning and development of program architecture

  • Understanding of regional or program accreditation standards and learning technologies and pedagogies
  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and direct team activities and results

  • Master’s degree in education or related field
  • 5+ years managing personnel or teams
  • 5+ years of experience working with concepts and frameworks of the learning sciences and practices
  • Higher education experience in a distance learning environment preferred
  • Experience in developing online education programs and experiences that are relevant, engaging, and available across multiple platforms
  • Experience in relationship management across a range of internal and external partners
  • Experience with or knowledge of user experience design or software development preferred
  • Experience with content management, metadata, and content management systems preferred
