Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Bowie State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. President Aminta Breaux, Ph.D. is seeking an accomplished academic leader and administrator to serve as the chief academic officer for the campus, who will be responsible for overseeing academics and research policies and priorities, ensuring the quality of the faculty and student body, and maintaining educational excellence. As a member institution of the University System of Maryland (USM), Bowie State University is building a dynamic future on a proud heritage.

Founded in 1865, Bowie State is the oldest Historically Black College/University in Maryland and one of the ten oldest in the country. It is also a diverse university whose 6,148 students, along with faculty and staff, represent many ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In addition to its 22 undergraduate majors, Bowie State offers 35 master’s, doctoral, and advanced certification programs with specific focus on science, technology, business, education and related disciplines. Bowie State is in the midst of one of the nation's most exciting metropolitan areas, within easy reach of Washington, DC, and Baltimore. At the same time, it boasts a serene campus on a 300-acre suburban wooded tract. With seven residence halls, the University is a hub of 24/7 undergraduate life, yet it also offers convenient evening classes and online courses to serve employed professionals seeking to move ahead in their careers.

Working closely with the President, the Provost will engage in strategic and master planning activities and work collaboratively with other members of the President's cabinet to provide stable, progressive leadership to the university. The Provost is responsible for the academic and research enterprise of the university and will lead the recruitment, retention and development of high quality and productive faculty. The Provost will lead institutional efforts to assess student-learning outcomes and to evaluate academic programs on a regular basis. As the chief academic officer he/she will encourage, support and mentor academic leaders, faculty and staff in their quests for grants and contracts that further the mission of the university and proactively pursue and nurture partnerships within USM, local, regional and state government organizations, associations and national and international institutions of higher education. Qualifications include an earned doctorate from an accredited institution with a record of distinguished teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with a tenured faculty appointment at the professor level in one of the disciplines at Bowie State University. Additional qualifications desired include a record of successful academic administrative leadership and outreach with a minimum of five years successful experience in a senior academic position in a comprehensive university offering graduate and undergraduate degrees; a record of innovation around academic programs; successful executive leadership experience in strategic planning, instructional technology, leading regional accreditation processes, faculty professional development, research grants, and outcomes assessment; excellent oral and written skills; and demonstrated skills in interacting collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and various other stakeholders.
