In particular, design the visual and user interface of new products and services, using a holistic end-to-end design process that results in actionable design artifacts such as user personas, information architecture designs, user flow diagrams, interactive wireframes and mockups and visual design comps.

This position is dual posted at level 2 and 3. This is a fixed-term position through June 30, 2020 in the Digital Library Systems and Services group with the possibility for renewal.
The User Experience Designer will design systems and interfaces to support the management, delivery and discovery of online resources at the Stanford University Libraries (SUL) and beyond. The person in this position will take a lead role in defining and designing the functionality, interface and application flow of digital library services and software in order to meet user requirements. The incumbent will base their work on the principles, research and best practices of human-computer interaction, user-centered systems design and online accessibility.
A key focus of the User Experience Designer will be to lead the business analysis and design process for SUL's development and maintenance, with a focus on the integration and development of systems based on Linked Open Data technologies. S/he will drive an agile design process that includes determining requirements, defining business logic, designing systems, supporting the software development process, and testing and quality control. In many cases this role will extend beyond Stanford and into the broader digital library community.
Lead efforts to ensure that information systems support the mission and objectives of SUL and coordinate the process of defining needs and designing solutions for digital library systems and special projects.
Manage, from a client business perspective, the requirements for related systems projects. Specifically, develop and lead the quality assurance process of newly developed digital library applications. This includes user and acceptance testing, as well as ensuring that applications meet departmental standards and comply with accessibility requirements.
Lead the elicitation and gathering of business and systems requirements using interviews, surveys, job shadowing and other elicitation techniques. Analyze new business requirements, system functionality, current system use and user needs; specify functional designs and work with developers and analysts to implement.
Develop system design for new or revised business systems; document and analyze input/output requirements.
May plan, direct, coordinate, monitor and review the work of others during all phases of the project team's work. The Designer will work directly with software developers from project inception through software development and product release. S/he will participate in sprint planning and daily standups, create and groom the product-engineering backlog, consult with engineers and review outputs to insure that they meet user requirements.
Coordinates the planning, development and presentation of training for users of digital library systems.
Manage relationships with software developers and third party vendors implementing systems based on specifications produced by the Designer.
Engage with the broader cultural heritage community on the design and development of open source digital library applications. Participate in, and occasionally lead requirements gathering, business analysis, and systems design of software used not only by SUL, but by peer institutions as well. This will include working directly with stakeholders, designers and software developers from other institutions.

To qualify at User Experience Designer 2 level:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and three years of experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires knowledge of, computer system capabilities, business processes and work flow.
Experience in designing web applications.
Experience in responsive design, and application of HCI to mobile application development.
Experience in designing for accessibility, ensuring adequate access to information through assistive technologies.
Skill in conducting user research, user testing, usability testing and analysis.
Skill in developing specifications and mockups using UI design tools and/or programming in web application languages.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to bridge functional and technical resources by communicating effectively with individuals of varying systems expertise.
Ability to design and document complex business systems.
Proven problem solving and analytical thinking and ability to approach problems logically and systematically.
Supervisory experience preferred - not a minimum.
Additional Relevant Knowledge, Skills and Abilities May Include:
Demonstrated expertise gathering and evaluating user requirements, in collaboration with product managers and engineers.
Illustrating design ideas using storyboards, process flows and/or sitemaps
Demonstrated experience leading community and open source design process.
Experience working in, and leading an agile design and software development process.
To qualify at User Experience Designer 3 level: With the above criteria, plus,
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a similar combination of education and relevant experience.
Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
Occasionally stand/walk, use a telephone.
Rarely writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
