Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated composite processing engineer for the MSU-led Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Institute (IACMI) Vehicles Technology Area Scale-up Research Facility (VTA-SURF) in Corktown Detroit.  The principle duties for this position are to: develop, plan and coordinate collaborative research development programs and service-for-fee projects with IACMI industrial partners.  Projects will focus on the manufacture of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites for vehicle structures (principally, automotive) and may include pre-forming and/or tape lay-up; development of intermediates (e.g., pre-preg, thermoplastic tapes, fiber-resin compounds); infusion, injection, and/or compression molding; and joining. These positions are renewable annually subject to the availability of funds.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum BS degree in Chemistry, Materials, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering and at least 5 years hands-on experience focused on composites processing/manufacturing.  Experience in infusion, injection and/or compression molding. Self-motivated with ability to work independently with little direction.  Ability to work well in a team.  Good collaborative and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications

Hands-on experience with production-scale manufacturing equipment.

Relevant industrial experience, especially in automotive composites.

Experience in authoring reports, supervision of personnel, utilizing productivity and engineering software, and data interpretation related to the processing of composites.

Experience with analytical instruments such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

Knowledge of DOE (Design of Experiments) techniques and applications.

Demonstration of effective leadership of a project team.
