Program Coordinator

Position Summary

The Visiting International Professional Program (VIPP) as part of MSU's International Studies and Programs, provides long and short term professional training programs to international visitors. VIPP was established in 1991, and has trained over 4,000 international visitors from more than 30 countries over the last 25 years. The team is working closely with MSU schools and offices to expend its program to attract diverse participants and funding sources. VIPP is searching for highly motivated individuals to join their international education team to serve as a Program Coordinator. The program coordinator assumes primary responsibility for administering VIPP long-term and short-term professional training programs. They manage open-enrollment for long-term programs and advise participants on visa and program requirements from the application stage to arrival and through the duration of the program. Additionally,they develop and deliver short-term training workshops by working with relevant MSU colleges and centers, and utilizing professional resources available in Michigan.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Participant Advising and Support

  • Provide detailed consultation to new applicants and guide their application process on Open SiS

  • Prepare all required documents at a high standard and share with VIPP and OISS for admission and visa. Keep all participant documents up to date on the shared drive

  • Provide comprehensive participant advising and support with topics such as program and course selection, academic, cultural and social activities, housing, health insurance, etc.

  • Provide initial settlement service, orientation and ongoing learning and living support by liaising with OISS, housing office,and relevant MSU academic units, etc. to ensure participants’ positive experience and satisfaction

  • Meet with participants on a weekly basis to monitor study progress and ensure participants’ success 


Program Development & Management

  • Develop short-term intensive workshop proposals to meet sponsor requirements, which include fee-for-service programs and U.S. federal agency funded programs

  • Deliver workshops by designing schedules; offering orientation; coordinating seminars, meetings, panel discussions and field trips; and arranging all logistics with the support of the office assistants such as hotel, meals, transportation, preparing program handouts, classroom facility, beverage etc; and host international visitors

  • Identify and secure MSU collaborative unit and individual faculty members for programming by various outreach and networking activities 

  • Actively pursue new programming opportunities to increase VIPP program enrollment by working with current participants, alumni and their sponsors

  • Work closely with the Director and Fiscal Officer on budgets (budgets setting, expenditure review and analysis) to ensure financial viability of all programs

  • Create and maintain program resource information to be filed on the VIPP resource book

  • Supervise and train student assistants for delivery of programming

  • Provide assistance and support, as needed, with all programming in VIPP


Required Degree


Minimum Requirements

Three years of professional work experience in an international education setting; highly organized and highly motivated with excellent written and oral communication skills

Desired Qualifications

PhD in any field; experience living, working or studying abroad; proficiency in a language other than English
