The School of Chemical Sciences (SCS) seeks a full-time (12-month) academic professional as a Spectrometrist. This position reports to the Director in the Mass Spec Facility and will assist the Director in the operation of the Mass Spectrometry Lab (MSL) by providing proficient and expert use in all the non-sector mass spectrometers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Perform MALDI-TOF MS services using both a Bruker UltrafleXtreme and Autoflex Speed for MALDI MS, MSMS, TLC and imaging.

Train, guide and oversee self-service MALDI users, answer general questions and help with sample analysis and data interpretation.

Maintain, optimize, calibrate and the tune the Bruker MALDI instruments for the self-service users.

Perform LCMS, LCMSMS including quantification.

Perform instrument maintenance, such as cleaning the ion source, replacing consumable parts and other minor repairs as needed.

Communicate and consult with student and post-doctoral users and faculty regarding their Mass Spectrometry needs.

Maintain the ChemFom instrument online reservation system.

Maintain and update the Mass Spectrometry webpage.

Oversee and train self-service ESI instruments users (Waters Quattro Ultima, Q-Tof, and ZMD, Thermo LTQ XL Orbitrap) and maintenances for these instruments.



Master's degree in chemistry or other relevant discipline with strong experience in Mass Spectrometry.

Minimum of 2 years' of mass spectrometry experience.

Well-developed interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.


PhD. degree in analytical chemistry or other relevant discipline with strong experience in Mass Spectrometry.

Hands on work in MALDI sample analysis of large biomolecules and small molecules, MALDI imaging, MALDI instrument maintenance, especially with experience with Bruker MALDI instruments and Bruker Flex Analysis software.

Hands on experience with maintenance and operation of MALDI, HPLC/UPLCMS, GCMS instruments.

Skills in chromatography such as HPLC, UPLC, GC, TLC.

Skills in sample preparation and clean up (buffer, detergent, and salt removal, etc.) of biological samples.

Skills in sample preparation for LCMS. For example, experience with SPE, molecular weight cutoff membranes, etc.

Expertise in LCMS and GCMS quantification.

Expertise with data acquisition on and maintenance of ESI-MS instruments.

Salary and Start Date: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting date is as soon as possible after closing date.
