A Ph.D. in Plant Biochemistry and/or Plant Molecular Genetics or a related field in hand by December 31, 2018. Ability to demonstrate professional competence in plant biochemistry and molecular genetics studies. Skills in the standard techniques of plant molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry. Experience in plant cell wall study.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in developing or applying biochemical or biophysical approaches in elucidating plant cell wall structure. Experience in plant cell wall polysaccharide and lignin structure composition analysis. Knowledge on plant cell wall biogenesis and lignification.

Brief Description of Duties:

Stony Brook University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in Dr. Chang-Jun Liu's Laboratory located in the Biology Department, Brookhaven National Laboratory. The successful candidate will participate in a collaborative research project aimed to elucidate cell wall structures of plant materials with disturbed lignification thus to understand whether and how walls can be physically strengthened without extensive crosslinking of lignin polymers.

The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Lab.

Perform experimental research including (but not limited to):

  • Create higher order mutant lines; generate stable isotope labeled plant materials.
  • Prepare plant cell wall samples, analyze plant cell wall composition, elucidate cell wall macro molecular ultrastructure.
  • Express and purify proteins from heterologous systems.
  • Conduct protein-protein and protein-ligand interaction assays.
  • Aid in the management of research laboratory including ordering and maintaining equipment, supplies and lab stocks, fostering a productive work environment and maintaining compliance with all environmental and safety procedures.
  • Prepare data for reporting experimental results in scientific publications.
  • Participate in weekly lab meeting and the Center’s theme meetings and the “all hands meetings”, presenting research data.
