Job Responsibilities:

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina is accepting applicants for a Corporal Officer in our Public Safety Office. This person has specific authority, under direct guidance of the Shift Sergeants, and ultimately the Captain of Operations and the Director of Public Safety or his designee, to make on-the-spot tactical evaluations and initiates specific responses to address same while ensuring the safety and security of students, visitors, faculty, staff and residents of The Citadel properties, roads and facilities and streets adjacent thereto. Must be able to utilize discretion in accordance with The Citadel DPS Policies and Procedures manual in functioning as the: law enforcement response coordinator/dispatch authority to include, NCIC transactions, blotter maintenance, information management, camera surveillance and point of contact for walk-in visitors; special events planning assistance (to include parking, security and traffic issues); issuance of parking permits; collection of fees and fines within the purview of The Citadel DPS; assisting with departmental training programs and any other duties as required.

Will collect and compile information on various projects consulting with management determining boundaries and priorities of new projects. Acts as response coordinator/dispatcher for all incoming calls for service while in duty status. Responsible for the creation and maintenance of The Citadel Department of Public Safety's web page. Prepare correspondence, inter-office forms, pertaining to campus information to the director, assistant director and executive staff at The Citadel. Assess technology and trends through participation in professional and personal studies. Provide training to employees as directed. Departmental contact and trainer for the Campus Emergency Notification System (Bull Dog Alert System). Train current and newly assigned personnel on the proper operation and initiation of the system depending upon the type of threat requiring individuals to conduct regularly scheduled testing maintaining system operation proficiency.

Must be able to exercise considerable initiative, independent judgment, and discretion and confidentiality while dealing with customers. Will be required to exercise initiative in keeping informed of all local, state and federal laws in addition to policies, rules, and regulations while performing under nominal supervision.  Individual will assume law enforcement and security response coordination in a dispatch role and makes judgments during potentially volatile law enforcement situations, responsible for initiating the Bulldog Alert System and monitoring all alarms systems and cameras under the purview of The Citadel DPS.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Employee could possess one of the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice AND five (5) years or more of law enforcement experience, one (1) of which must have been at the rank of Private First Class or higher in a department commensurate in size to The Citadel DPS
  •  High School/GED diploma/certificate AND seven (7) years or more of law enforcement experience, two (2) of which must have been at the rank of Private First Class or higher in a department commensurate in size and scope to The Citadel DPS

Must have South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy certification as a Class 1 Law Enforcement officer at time of appointment OR must be previously certified in another state or federal system. Must obtain SC Class 1 certification within six (6) months of beginning employment. 

Law enforcement experience is required. Employee must be able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal format, maintain weapons qualifications and physical self-defense skills to include all firearms, taser, straight baton and OC spray. Must be able to operate computers, sophisticated alarms, communication devices, cameras and early warning equipment. Must possess a current South Carolina Driver's License. The candidate must possess demonstrable leadership, motivational, analytical, organizational and communication skills. Basic knowledge of administrative functions to include basic keyboarding, filing, matrix construction, file preparation and maintenance are necessary. Must maintain physical fitness level enabling continual enforcement/performance of police duties .
