San José State University seeks an experienced, innovative leader and a powerful advocate for students to serve as its next vice president for student affairs.
San José State University (San José State), located in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, is the fifth largest of the 23 campuses of the California State University (CSU) System. Founded in 1857, San José State is the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast. As one of the 200 top research universities in the nation, San José State offers rigorous course work and research opportunities to almost 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students in seven colleges. San José State holds HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) and AANAPISI (Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander Serving Institution) designations.
The Division of Student Affairs provides comprehensive programs and services designed to support the academic and career and life aspirations of students and create a climate for learning and engagement that enhances the student experience. The rich diversity of backgrounds within the student body at San José State informs the work of the Division. An experienced and committed staff works in partnership with faculty and students to maximize the opportunities for student success on a campus with a distinguished history of social activism and a current commitment to a richly multicultural community. The division aspires to organize its resources and services in support of the needs of its students. With 4,200 students in residence and thousands more students living in apartments in the area of the University, the student life program at San José State is both complex and comprehensive and is in need of consistent, visionary, and experienced leadership to realize its full potential.
Reporting to President Mary Papazian, Ph.D., the vice president for student affairs provides leadership and direction for the University’s program and staff in a comprehensive student affairs portfolio which includes enrollment support, admissions, registration, financial aid services, housing services, campus life and co-curricular activities that promote and contribute to student learning, civic responsibility and student health and wellness. Working closely with other senior administrators, the VPSA leads an on-going comprehensive effort campus-wide to manage university enrollments within the goals, policies and budgetary guidelines set forth by the State of California, the California State University, and San José State.
The vice president will inspire and direct the work of a staff of 350 and manage a budget of approximately $102M. Serving as an institutional leader on all student-related issues and concerns, the vice president will champion the intellectual and social growth of a diverse population and ensure that institutional policies and practices provide fair and equitable treatment of all applicants and students. The institution is seeking a visionary leader who will engage in creating and supporting a vibrant and future-oriented student affairs division.
A master’s degree is required: a doctoral degree is preferred. The vice president will have at least ten years of relevant and progressively responsible management experience in an institution of higher education. Experience in a collective bargaining environment is preferred. Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited.
