    The University of California, Irvine School of Law invites applications for the position of Fellow in its Immigrant Rights Clinic (IRC). The fellowship is designed to provide an attorney who has a strong interest in the field with mentorship and support to advance a career in public interest law or to launch a career in clinical teaching.

    UCI Law is proud to have a dynamic clinical program already ranked highly in nationwide surveys. IRC was launched in 2011 and is one of several core clinics at UC Irvine that meet the School of Law's clinical requirement. Clinic students, working under close faculty supervision, provide direct representation to immigrants on matters ranging from bond representation and complex removal defense to combating workplace exploitation and beyond. IRC also provides legal support to grassroots organizations focused on critical issues affecting low-income immigrants. IRC strives for and models high quality, holistic and transformative lawyering. It acts in accordance with the foundational insight that the community is best served when lawyers help empower marginalized individuals and groups to advocate for themselves.

    The IRC Fellow will work under the supervision of IRC Director(s). Areas of work are likely to include: collaboration with local grassroots community organizations, such as Resilence OC, on deportation defense campaigns and policy initiatives; strategic support for rapid response networks at the local and national level; and litigation on behalf of noncitizens, including those who have experienced violations of their civil and constitutional rights. Other work may include litigation and advocacy on behalf of immigrant workers on labor and employment issues. In each of these areas, there will be opportunities to develop sophisticated, community-centered law and organizing strategies. The IRC Fellow may also have opportunities to teach clinic classes and supervise students during the fellowship term.

    The IRC Fellow is expected to be a vital part not only of IRC, but also of the Clinical Law Program and the intellectual life of the Law School more generally. The IRC Fellow is expected to be joined by clinical fellows in two other program areas during 2018.

    A J.D. from an A.B.A.-accredited law school is required. Membership in any state bar is required. Preference will be given to candidates with at least 3-5 years of practical experience. Proficiency in Spanish is also helpful, though not required.

    Candidates must possess a strong interest in working on immigrant rights issues; superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; the ability to think imaginatively and critically about approaches to challenges facing immigrant communities; the ability to work collaboratively with clients, students, faculty, and administrators; a strong work ethic and demonstrated understanding of the applicable ethical rules; and the ability to juggle multiple competing priorities and meet firm deadlines.
