The successful candidate will join our dynamic and internationally recognized department, with specializations in bioinformatics and statistics, crop genetic improvement, crop production, environmental systems, horticulture, plant protection, sustainable food systems, and water quality. CPSC includes 44 faculty involved in teaching, research, and extension programs and hosts an additional 10 USDA-Agricultural Research Service scientists. Our department offers two cutting-edge undergraduate majors: Computer Science + Crop Sciences established in 2017 and Crop Sciences with seven major concentrations. We provide several online programs ranging from a Master's degree, professional certificates, and continuing education units. Approximately 150 undergraduate, 115 on-campus graduate students, and 50 off-campus graduate students are enrolled. The department is housed in four campus buildings and manages the Crop Sciences Research and Education Center including the Energy Farm, which is adjacent to the Urbana campus, the Sustainable Student Farm, and two outlying research centers. The department houses the USDA-ARS Soybean Germplasm Collection and the USDA-ARS Maize Genetics Cooperation Stock Center.

The Department of Crop Sciences ( is advancing agriculture through local and international research to increase food security while protecting the environment. Our internationally recognized faculty lead cutting-edge research programs that educate the next generation of agriculture professionals. International outreach relationships include IRRI and CIMMYT. Department-wide, responsibilities are divided between research, teaching, and extension with annual support of about $5 million from state and federal recurring funds, and about $13 million from grants, contracts, and gifts.

The Professor and Head of the Department of Crop Sciences is a full-time administrative position in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This position is responsible for the administration of the research, teaching, outreach, Extension, and international activities of the Department of Crop Sciences. Specifically, the Head's responsibilities are:

• Provide leadership and vision to the department, advancing the goals of the land-grant mission in teaching, research, outreach, Extension, and international activities

• Develop and communicate departmental policy guidelines in consultation with the faculty

• Plan, supervise, and recruit for all academic programs in the department

• Recruit, supervise, evaluate, and mentor faculty and staff in the department

• Administer budgetary and financial matters within the department

• Facilitate development and fundraising

• Represent the department at the college and campus levels

• Maintain liaisons with leaders in industry, government, other universities, public groups, and professional societies


All candidates must hold a Ph.D. in crop sciences, horticulture, plant pathology, or another discipline complementary with departmental programs. Candidates must be qualified for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor. The position requires demonstrated leadership, administration, and management skills, as well as an ability to work with people and communicate ideas effectively. Candidates must also demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission of a land-grant university and to international activities. Experience with public and private funding sources is necessary.


Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
