Research Associate

Job description

Working Title: Research Associate

Position Type: Professional Research Staff

Department: Department of Biology

Location: Charlottesville

Posting Date: 06-30-2016

Posting Summary:
The University of Virginia's Neuronal Circuits Lab, under the direction of Dr. Ali D. Guler, seeks applicants for a Research Associate (postdoctoral) position. The position will involve working on a project focusing on developing novel technologies for neuronal circuit mapping and application of these techniques to decipher neuronal correlates of behavior in mice. A Ph.D. in neuroscience or related field by the start date is required along with experience conducting whole-cell patch clamp in brain slices. This is a one-year appointment; however appointments may be renewed for additional one-year increments up to three years, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.

More generally, the Guler Lab investigates the role of genetically defined neuronal circuits in homeostatic or goal-directed behaviors including sleep and food consumption. Our work focuses on the dynamic interactions between the brain centers governing homeostasis and the rest of the central nervous system with particular attention on the role of mesolimbic pathway in these networks. We use genetically encoded actuators in combination with in vivo electrophysiology to modulate and monitor the activity of select neuron populations during behavioral tasks. The successful candidate will profit from these multi-method approaches and have the opportunity to closely collaborate with a diverse group of neuroscientist in the department.
