The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia is seeking a postdoctoral Research Associate in experimental AMO physics to explore and control coherent atomic and molecular dynamics driven and probed by intense, ultrashort laser and THz pulses.
The incumbent will work independently, and in collaboration with Bob Jones and other members of his research group, on a variety of projects including: intense laser ionization and fragmentation of molecules that have been transiently aligned/oriented by intense THz pulses; the use of nano- and micro-structures to enhance THz fields to manipulate electron dynamics in the presence of strong laser fields; and the use of attosecond electron wavepackets as time-resolved probes atomic and molecular potentials. Previous experience in strong-field/ultrafast AMO physics involving the use of intense femtosecond laser pulses to study atoms, molecules, and/or surfaces is preferred.
Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. degree in Physics (or a closely related field) prior to the appointment start date, and demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. This is a one-year appointment, with the potential for renewal for up to two additional one year appointments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
