Research Associate

Job description

Working Title: Research Associate

Position Type: Professional Research Staff

Department: Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics

Location: Charlottesville

Posting Date: 07-13-2017

Posting Summary:
The laboratory of Dr. Mazhar Adli at the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics at the University of Virginia invites applicants to apply for the position of Research Associate. We particularly invite applicants who are exited about the analysis of "BIG" genomic data to identify and functionally validate genetic and epigenetic basis of cancer and other diseases. In this role, the candidate will analyze and interpret high-throughput genomic data from whole-genome sequencing, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq and single cell RNA-Seq data to formulate or test specific hypothesis.

The Adli lab ( is using genomic and epigenomic mapping, manipulating as well as imaging approaches to understand how external (developmental and environmental cues) and internal (genetic abnormalities) cues alter gene regulation, chromatin structure, and the 3D genome organization in the nuclear space. In addition to using conventional genomic and epigenomic approaches, the lab is also exploiting its existing expertise in CRISPR technology (Nature Biotechnology, 2014; NAR, 2015) to develop and use CRISPR-based next-generation locus specific chromatin manipulation and imaging (Nature Communications, 2017) as well as catalytically inactive Cas9 based gene silencing through base editing (Nature Methods, 2016; Nature Methods, 2017) technologies. The current proposal is based on our recent exciting preliminary results and long-term interest in understanding the role of nuclear lamina and its associated proteins in genome architecture and gene regulation.

The selected candidate will have additional responsibilities of meeting weekly with the Principal Investigator to discuss experimental results, conduct literature searches, present results in weekly lab meetings and at conferences as well as in interdepartmental seminars.

The candidate must work independently and ethically, document all research data appropriately, assist graduate students in the lab, apply for independent funding where applicable, and publish data in qualified journals. The completion of a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics or a related field is required by the appointment start date. Experience with bioinformatics, computational biology and/or computer science is required. Familiarity with one or more programming languages is preferred.

To apply, visit and search on Posting Number 0621281. For additional information about the Adlilab, please visit and please complete a Candidate Profile online, attach a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for at least two references. Applicant review will begin July 24, 2017, and the position will remain open for applications until filled.
