Posting Summary:
The Parichy lab at University of Virginia seeks an individual to assist with daily care and upkeep of zebra fish and related species. The laboratory has a state of the art facility comprising more than 1800 fish tanks for over 150 genetic stocks that are used in studies of developmental genetics and evolutionary biology. The incumbent will perform critical tasks including fish feeding, changing of tanks, producing embryos and preparing solutions. The position will require up to 40 hours per week and occasional work on weekends and evenings. This is a wage position which is not eligible for leave or other benefits and is limited to 1500 hours of work in a year. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be able to learn and perform routine maintenance on large, multi-tank, self-contained aquatic habitats, and be able to learn how to perform a basic mechanical inspection of the aquatic system.
Must be observant so that possible problems with the habitat systems, or any signs of poor health in the animals can be addressed.
Ability to understand fish behavior and basic genetic principles.
Ability to follow set lab policies and procedures and adhere to regulatory guidelines in daily work.
Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication in daily interactions in order to work independently and as part of a team and provide direct support to leaders as needed; and to note observations, prepare materials and reports, and maintain records.
Ability to understand fish behavior and basic genetic principles.
