The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for a Principal Scientist position. The incumbent will be expected to investigate therapeutic approaches for retinal disorders including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Additional research will focus on understanding the mechanisms of basic vascular pericyte biology in the eye as it relates to pathologic retinopathy. As a Principal Scientist, the successful candidate will be expected to initiate research, conduct research independently, and seek appropriate funding.
A PhD or MD is required at the time of hire. Experience with standard molecular biology, cell culture techniques and animal handling is essential. Prior experience with microRNA, microvascular biology, pericytes, and stem cells is helpful. A background in Ophthalmology, development, cell biology, vascular biology, macrophage/microglia biology or biochemistry is preferred.
