The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for a Research Associate (post-doctoral) to work with Dr. Bryan Berger as part of a NSF-funded commercialization grant.
Candidates must have a PhD in life sciences or engineering, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to adapt to changing customer and team needs. Additional expertise in areas including food safety/packaging/manufacturing, fermentation, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, bioprocess engineering, product development, regulatory and business model development is preferred.
The Berger laboratory has developed a green, enzymatic alternative to chemical disinfectants used in food harvesting, processing and packaging. The candidate will work directly with a team (scientific founder, business advisor, and investors) to translate this microbial decontamination technology from the academic laboratory to a viable start-up. Specific job duties include:
1. Perform market and customer discovery to identify and confirm potential areas and end users of technology; this will require networking as well as travel for meetings.
2. Work with potential end-users and scientific founder to implement technology in lab, including screening and testing, to meet customer needs and specifications.
3. Work with strategic partners for scale-up and production of enzyme prototypes.
4. Grant writing for R&D, including SBIR, and working with team to secure seed funding.
5. Learn and apply lean startup model for business model canvas development to create a viable business model canvas based on laboratory results and end-user input.
6. Create a successful MVP and secure initial customer. This includes product development, manufacturing, and delivery to the first client/s at a trial/test scale.
All professional research staff appointments are made on a one-year basis and annual reappointment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and the continued availability of funding. Current University policy limits research associate appointments to three years without approval from the Office of the Vice President for Research.
