Posting Summary:
The Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning in the University of Virginia in the Curry School of Education seeks highly qualified applicants for multiple two-year post-doctoral research associate positions. The positions are part of the VEST Postdoctoral Program, an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare research associates to engage in rigorous research in education science. We seek applicants whose experiences and/or prior research motivates them to engage in research on inequities in education that stem from poverty, racial inequity or other emergent demographic realities in U.S. schools. Incumbents participate in research on projects examining: efficacy of programs and practices designed to improve social and emotional learning; quality of early childhood classrooms; effective teachers and teaching; classroom contexts conducive to science and/or math learning; teacher-student relationships and interactions; classroom practices that redress educational inequity; service-learning and/or project-based learning. Research Associates will engage in partnership experiences with educational practitioners or policymakers.

The research associates will work with either Sara Rimm-Kaufman or Bob Pianta as their primary mentor and will develop a line of research that involves collaboration with one or more secondary mentors. Potential secondary mentors include: Catherine Bradshaw, Julie Cohen, Jason Downer, Bridget Hamre, Amanda Kibler, Jennifer LoCasale-Crouch, Tish Jennings, Natalia Palacios, Jessica Whittaker, Vivian Wong.

The incumbents become part of a network of post-doctoral trainees at the Curry School of Education in research centers including, the Center for the Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL), the Center on Educational Policy and Workforce Competitiveness (EdPolicyWorks), and Youth-Nex.

A Ph.D. in Education, School and Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, or a relevant social science discipline is required by the start date of the position. Evidence of substantive knowledge and background in the field of education and/or developmental science is essential. Strong evidence of expertise in quantitative methods is required. Experience with qualitative and mixed methods work is essential. Strong communication and project management skills are required. Applicants with a track record of publication are strongly preferred. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status is required.

Research associates are appointed annually and continuation is dependent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2017 and continue until the positions are filled.
