Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Research Associate

Job description

Working Title: Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Research Associate

Position Type: Professional Research Staff

Department: Department of Neuroscience

Location: Charlottesville

Posting Date: 10-26-2017

Posting Summary:
Postdoctoral Research Associate or Research Scientist

The Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate or a Research Scientist to study the molecular mechanisms of meningeal lymphatic function in neurological disorders. The position is in the laboratory of Dr. Jonathan Kipnis, PhD, within the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia and is sponsored by the School of Medicine as a part of investment into an intellectual property generating entity within the Kipnis lab.

This exciting endeavor entitled, "The Meningeal Lymphatic Drug Discovery Project" has very specific objectives. The ultimate goals of the project are to evaluate, both in vitro and in vivo, the utility of genes, proteins, and other biomolecules identified as important to meningeal function. While these findings alone have significant potential, further research to translate the findings into therapeutically relevant drugs is required.

The Project Team (Research Scientist/Postdoctoral Research Associate and Investigator) will periodically consult with a Research Committee before making any decisions that may materially impact the goals of the Project and the anticipated timeline for achieving these goals. This project is time-sensitive and shall not exceed a conclusion date of December 31, 2018, unless otherwise authorized by the EVP for Health Affairs. The position may be available in Kipnis Lab after this date dependent upon results of the project and continuation of funding.

Candidates for the Postdoctoral Research Associate position must have received a PhD and/or MD degree by the start date or within the last three years. Candidates for the Research Scientist position must have a PhD and/or MD and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience. All candidates must have a background in Neuroscience or Immunology, as well as extensive experience conducting independent research and supervising research trainees and/or technicians. In addition, the candidate must have first author publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and effective oral and written communication skills.

To apply visit and search for Posting Number 0621972. Applicants should complete a candidate profile, and attach a cover letter, CV, and a list of three references. For questions regarding the position or application process, please contact Jon Stafford at [email protected] The position is contingent on continued funding and will be open until filled.
