The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia is seeking a Research Associate (Postdoctoral level) to work under the supervision of Dr. Roseanne Ford.
The successful candidate will perform studies on the transport of chemotactic microorganisms to oil droplets associated with bioremediation of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Duties will include conducting assays for bacterial chemotaxis with microfluidic devices to determine transport parameters over a range of chemoattractant concentrations and near an oil/water interface in the presence of surfactants and over a range of temperatures. In addition, general laboratory supervision and mentorship of graduate and undergraduate researchers is expected.
A PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related field, with experience in fabrication and operation of microfluidic is required. Experience with multiphase systems and interfacial phenomena is preferred. The applicant should also possess good technical writing skills as evidenced by publication of papers in archival journals.
